Northern Train Driver Application

Hello all,

I'm hoping to get some advice please, approx four months ago I applied for trainee train driver with Northern based from Leeds. The online portal states 'application in process' I'm wondering whether it generally takes this long or something might have happened to my application IE they have dropped me and not yet notified me?

Given the news regarding the government takeover of Northern is it likely they will continue to recruit drivers at this stage or would you think it's more likely that they will drop the current applications until more information is known about what the government is planning?

Any help and assistance is greatly appreciated.

As long as it says application in process then you're ok. It'll change to assessments for interviews etc

It may be worth emailing northern HR, I was left without an update for 3 months and it turned out it had been lost in translation somewhere. Which when you think about the amount of applications they are dealing with doesn’t seem too unreasonable.

As long as it is not marked as 'End of Process' you are fine.

There's lots of us in the same boat as you with northern. They are just very slow.

Having applied to Southern a few times with application showing as processing for 2-3 months it only shows as closed in my case anyway when rejection email is sent out, it always seems a very long process but.... hopefully you’ll get a positive response & move forward

I'm in the same boat - applied in October 2019, interviewed and passed everything in January - got an email with "feel free to keep applying / we'll let you know when we have dates for a training course".

I guess time will tell.

I had the update 2 weeks back saying to be patient due to a high number of applicants, that was for Sheffield though. Be good to know if they are still proceeding with trainees after changes.

hi, I’m same buddy had the update email about 2 weeks ago also for Sheffield. It’s a long waiting game! Did you apply for TPE as well for Sheffield?

Yes was unsuccessful with tpe though. Have been in a talent pool with DB since October and passed all tests with Freightliner. Not heard anything from them since December lol

Morning all,

So the plot has thickened a little.

I received an email from HR at Northern about 10 days ago stating:

"We are getting in touch as we do not foresee any selection days being held within the next 6 months. Therefore, we would like to let you know your application will be kept on file, as we would like to consider your application for when we begin recruiting again.

We will be in contact in due course, as soon as we have a further update for you. We do appreciate your patience through this process and your continued interest in the role."

Fast forward to a couple of days ago I log in to my application portal to check something with my CV and notice that my status now says 'End of process' so I'm confused as to whether they have since had time to check my application and binned me or they have done this and it will go live again when they recruit in the next 6 months?

Naturally I've emailed Northern for clarification but if anyone has any advice or can assist me I'd be extremely grateful.

The way I read that is that they have binned you and will automatically submit your application when recruiting starts again in six months time.

This could have a lot to do with the transfer of the Northern franchise from Arriva to the Dft/OOLR, there are a few threads relating to this, Northern Sheffield/Darlington trainee drivers if i remember correctly, plus, if the link works, this is on the Northern rail careers site: https://www.northernrailway.co.uk/corporate/careers

Thanks guys, I didn't want to seem stupid by asking but if it is the case that they have binned me until the next recruitment round it might have been better not to have placed 'end of process' as my outcome as when I have previously applied and failed that was the heading I was given then too.

I mean the questions were not what I was expecting....questions like give example when you went above and beyond on a project? I was expecting more like working under pressure and etc

I had mine for Sheffield yesterday and thought the exact same! Almost non of the questions were your typical driver ones, really threw me to be honest!

I did the same thing I prepped for certain questions ie the qualities of a train driver and the questions were nothing like I thought they would ask, some were obviously but I was like D’OH!!! I just keep rethinking about the questions, I should of said this instead of that etc. But I like said good luck to everyone.

I had mine at 0930 and they said the guy at 0830 never showed up. Some of questions I got asked, I really struggled with, but I gave an answer but now I’m kicking myself I should of said this etc. What about you mate?
