I am aware that some years ago Northern and Scotrail jointly ran a service between Glasgow and Newcastle via Dumfries and Kilmarnock. However I also seem to recall that there was a service operated by Northern which ran between Carlisle and Dumfries. Does anyone know if this was a Scotrail service with a Northern unit, or a Northern service with Scotrail crew or a Northern service with Northern crew or anything else?

Much appreciated

It operated in the same manner as the through services to/from Glasgow Central (and previously Stranraer). North of Carlisle they were ScotRail responsibility, South/West of Carlisle they were Northern operated. A northern unit was used for this one (as opposed the other through services where ScotRail units were used.

Northern units and traincrew ran a number of services between Carlisle and Dumfries during this time, but they were always operated by ScotRail officially.

One service I think was a northern unit and a ScotRail traincrew.

My understanding is that Dumfries train crew depot only opened in 2003. How was the service ran crew wise before that?

I believe that there was a Northern Spirit service between Glasgow and Leeds. I’m not sure whether this went via Lockerbie or Dumfries though.

From Carlisle. The Northern unit would leave very early from Carlisle, go to Dumfries, then run through all the way to Newcastle.

I thought the crew that operated it north of Carlisle were Scotrail crew based at Carlisle, in the same way that Northern crew operated the Scotrail units east of Carlisle. But I may be misremembering.

There were a few anomalies in that part of the world. There was an afternoon Newcastle-Whitehaven through train which was a Northern Spirit unit but using a FNW crew west of Carlisle.

It went via Lockerbie - although not stopping there - with a Carlisle-based Northern crew.

No, ScotRail never had a traincrew depot at Carlisle. These services were also worked by Carlisle-based Northern crews until ScotRail opened their new traincrew depot at Dumfries in 2003. At that time, a small number of Northern drivers and conductors transferred from Carlisle to Dumfries - and IIRC one or two Glasgow and Ayr drivers - but the remaining vacancies were filled by local recruitment 'off the street'.

I believe that Carlisle very occasionally used a Pacer on the first morning departure to Dumfries, and the corresponding return from Dumfries.

The Newcastle - Stranraer & Glasgow services changed crews at Carlisle, and often there were goodish loads of passengers travelling across Carlisle, especially in summer. .

Newcastle-Stranraer????
Newcastle to Stranraer. Used to get decent loads back in the day, especially in the summer.

Wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest, I think I’ve actually seen photos of it now I come to think of it.

I generally tried to aim for the through trains to/from Glasgow or Stranraer as the only way of guaranteeing to avoid the bloody 142s.

Yes. Via Kilmarnock & Ayr. Ceased to run several years ago.
Back in the day, It was a steam locomotive -hauled train with seven or eight coaches - often worked by a BR standard 'Clan' light Pacific West of Carlisle. Indeed prior to its closure in 1965, it used to run via the 'Port Road' through Castle Douglas and Newton Stewart. There was/is a large Irish diaspora on Tyneside, many of whom regularly visited family and friends in Ireland via the Stranraer-Larne ferries.

And Class 153 too. Which caused confusion in Glasgow Control one morning when a Driver reported engine out at Dumfries; When told to go forward on the other engine he replied 'I've only got one !'.

It seems so odd to me that some Northern staff were transferred to Dumfries and it stuck around for so long. I can’t actually find many photos or videos of northern units there which is why I was questioning if it happened of not

This arrangement could cause some fun if anything went wrong between Carlisle and Dumfries after the units went north in a morning. On at least one occasion the ScotRail 156 off the morning Newcastle - Glasgow covered a Carlisle - Leeds after the booked unit was used to cover the Newcastle - Carlisle portion of a Dumfries - Newcastle, because the Northern unit was stuck at Dumfries

I think the trapped Northern unit may also have made it to Glasgow.

Correct. I drove one of them - 156 496 - from Skipton to Leeds in 1994.

Northern Units also occasionally escaped to Glasgow. One got on a diagram and ended up in East Kilbride before it was noticed and sent back down.

There were also instances of ScotRail 156s doing a tour of some North East Northern services covering for unavailable Heaton 156s before being sent home

That was a refubished one in early 2019 I seem to recall. Remember seeing pics of it at the time and being a little amused at seeing EK line stops on a Northern PIS system.

I do remember travelling from Dumfries in 2010 and the unit being a 150 which originated there, heading to Carlisle. Can't remember whether it was Scotrail or Northern, though, sadly.

Wonder how a 150 got to Carlisle. They don't use the Cumbrian coast line, and none based in Newcastle. So, did it come from Leeds via Settle & Carlisle line ?

Yes, it would have come from Leeds....but only with a Leeds or Skipton crew. Carlisle drivers and conductors never signed 150s.

Meaning it would have needed to be a Yorkshire crew route conducted by Carlisle to/from Dumfries? Unless the Yorkshire guys signed to Dumfries (can't think they would)? What time of day I wonder, because that would be a challenge especially first thing in the morning.

Interesting question. There was one Carlisle driver who had previously been at Skipton....but I'm fairly certain that he transferred back to Carlisle before the 150s arrived for their second stint in Yorkshire. When I was at Skipton, I took a 150 to Carlisle on at least two occasions....one of which was a Lancashire DalesRail service from Blackpool - coupled to a 156 - which I relieved at Hellifield and worked back Southwards in the afternoon.

IIRC, the only two S&C turns which had long enough breaks at Carlisle to traction conduct to Dumfries and back would have been on Saturdays. One was a Leeds job which worked the 08 47 from Leeds, arriving Carlisle at
11 28; returning with the semi-fast at 15 03, back into Leeds at about 17 30. The other was a Skipton job which relieved the 10 47 from Leeds at Skipton at 11 28, arriving Carlisle at 13 28; then returning from Carlisle at 16 18, arriving Skipton at 18 22.

However, you have to remember that a Leeds or Skipton crew traction conducting to Dumfries and back would still require a minimum 30 minutes break at Carlisle....plus 5 minutes walking time each way to and from the mess room on platform 1.

I’m half wondering whether someone mistook it for a 156 given outward similarity (no idea how similar the cabs are)? Or possibly it was a “mistake” to keep things moving rather than a mistake without inverted commas if you get my drift.

Although I suspect unlikely by the more regimented times of 2010?

Does the OP recall if it was a single 2car working because if it been behind a 156 leaving Carlisle then the driver may have had an unexpected surprise when they changed ends?

There were no Northern staff transferred to Dumfries. The new depot was mainly staffed with new starters with a small number of qualified staff who transferred from other Scotrail depots.

There was another anomaly in the early days of privatisation that hasn’t been mentioned.

The 06:43 service from Carlisle to Dumfries utilised the unit off the first arrival from Workington, with a Carlisle crew working it forward.

You ended up with a First NorthWestern unit working a Scotrail service with a Northern Rail train crew!

I think this itself is another anomaly. This unit may have come off a Newcastle - Whitehaven the previous day. The 1995 timetable has a 1600 Newcastle - Whitehaven. So this would be a "Northern" (Regional Railways North East/Northern Spirit) unit with a First North Western crew.

Carlisle it seems had quite a fluid approach to privatisation!

A bit different, but on 15 September 1990, I had 31412 from Carlisle to Dumfries on the 14:00 Carlisle to Ayr.....

The Newcastle to Whitehaven unit (2M34) came back the same night.
The 06:43 Dumfries unit formed a Cumbrian coast service when it returned.

Wasn't that an oddity though as Pacers were barred North of Carlisle as I recall due to not being route cleared - though it did indeed happen on occasion... Was actually jolly good fun for them to stretch their legs
