Is there any news on the traction for the S&C and Lancaster routes. I've heard Northern are likely to keep the popular 158's on the S&C. In my opinion I would try and run 158's to Lancaster as there are many people who make start to end journeys on that route. After all Leeds to Heysham on a 2 coach 150 is a bit horrible. Also have the services been timed to meet the boats at Heysham?

I did Leeds to Lancaster on a 144 about 5 years ago to avoid changing trains in Manchester and it was alright. I imagine services will be timed for a 150 even if 156s or 158s are used.

No certainty that the Lancaster route will get better rolling stock other than replacement of the services that are currently Railbus worked, and even if this route does get better stock eventually it clearly isn't going to happen until most of the new and cascaded trains arrive.

I think 156's are going to be in demand for the Cumbrian Coast and North East non Connect Services so there might be more chance of a 158 than a 156, or if your really unlucky a 155:lol:

Looking at the draft times, there doesn't appear to be time for a boat train service. It could interwork with something else, or the existing Lancaster to Morecambe service could take an extended break to cover Heysham.

Based on the information provided on this thread, arrival times in Lancaster will be something like:
0642, 0908, 1008, 1208, 1408, 1608, 1938 and 2107;
with return workings at:
0648, 0938, 1038, 1243, 1443, 1743, 2030 and 2130.

So only the 1608 - 1743 would have time to do it.

Of course, Northern could always share the timetables with the general public rather than being precious with them so we could cease speculating and adding 144 + 144 to equal 442

The 1340 is the express, so of minimal benefit to users of intermediate stations.

You mean the users of the stations between Carlisle and Settle exclusive - and also exclusive of Appleby and Kirkby Stephen? How many people is that going to be?

Well, if it doesn't call it will be none! But if the trains either side are three hours apart it means that the service is less attractive than it otherwise would be, so some people will not travel at all.

Also don't forget those stations not called at between Settle and Skipton, and presumably also semi-fast between Skipton and Leeds as per present services.

What I hadn't spotted is the lack of a Leeds service from Settle direction between about 0729 and the 1105. 30 minutes later than at present.

Northern are probably waiting to cascade 156s onto the Leeds-Lancaster service, but does the traincrew involved have traction knowledge?

I believe Skipton crews still sign 156s but knowledge among Leeds crews is likely to have lapsed, at least in theory. There was a cryptic comment somewhere on the forum that a small number of Leeds crews have somehow retained their knowledge though I doubt it would be enough of them to allow for robust crew scheduling.

Why should it call there though? Most of them don't call at those stations - and they already have a number of alternative services.

I wouldn't worry about crew knowledge of units... with the amount of new units coming in there will be plenty of training to be done regardless, and a number of unit types will move around the network I'm sure, such as 158s going to Heaton.

1247 from Lancaster and then 1320 from Heysham coming back. Looks like it is the Lancaster - Morecambe shuttle just going a bit further on that trip.

Class 158's can't use Platforms 1 and 2 at Lancaster which could provide complications in times of crisis if not in the normal timetable.

That's true, I can't remember when they were due to lose them.

Will 155s still be around?

All 155's are meant to be retained although given the amount of time it tuck to refurb the first unit one wonders if they might be better looking at other options, I suspect Northern will use them for West York's based diagrams which need a slightly higher capacity than a 150 which I guess could include trips the Lancaster/Morecambe

Sorry if this is off topic but when are the 158s due to be transferred to Heaton?

Off Topic and not to form a discussion but i think some of Anglia's units would be prime to replace them if the refurb work continues to be less than ideal.

The "Scarborough Shuttle" (if, by that, you mean Northern's York/Scarborough service) is not due to start in 2018.

For the Scarborough <> Hull via Bridlington route, there are weekday departures hourly from Scarborough at just after the hour starting at 0702 and then mostly xx07 until 2107. From Hull to Scarborough at or just after xx15 from 0615 till 1917. It's also hourly on Sundays with shorter hours; first Scarborough departure 1017, last 2126; first Hull departure 0836, last 1936.

Additional hourly Hull <> Bridlington and the odd Beverley are also present on weekdays.

Reminder: these are DRAFT proposals.

A quick look down about half if it (lost patience!) shows the destination of all the southbounds as "Hull" and not any further.

I'd be interested to know when was the last time a Class 158 called at Lancaster, presumably we're going back to the days of the Glasgow Central/Edinburgh Waverley to Manchester Airport service?

Don't they occasionally run on the service from Leeds?

There's a pic of one at Skipton, having come from Lancaster at http://www.lasrug.btck.co.uk/

I've caught one a couple of times between Lancaster and Leeds in the last couple of years.

On one occasion, it was the last train back to Leeds and turned up an hour and twenty minutes late (it was terminated at Skipton).

On another occasion (towards the start of last year I think) the usual 144 developed a fault at Gargrave and had to return to Skipton. The following Carlisle service (which was 2 158's) was split, with the front one doing the Morecambe diagram for the rest of the day (I caught it back to Leeds later on).

I recall in the early 2000s FNW used them on some Blackpool/Barrow/Windermere-Airport duties.
