Northern tickets as compensation

I came across the forum while looking for info regarding the free tickets Northern give you as compensation for delays. Sadly the thread has now closed.

Am I able to use a single ticket to go from Manchester Airport to Newcastle via Carlisle. A convoluted route but if it's free I'm going!

Or you can go via Settle

A further option for Manchester Airport to Newcastle is to use Northern from Manchester to Oxenholme Lake District, then pay for a separate ticket from Oxenholme Lake District to Carlisle, then resume your journey by Northern from Carlisle to Newcastle. Obviously this costs more than £0 because of the need to buy the separate ticket, but it can have a very competitive journey time. A further option could be to make a change of train at Salford Crescent (or walk from Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Victoria) and Leeds, with another separate ticket from York to Newcastle. However this adds further changes of train into the mix so of course may be less convenient and is sometimes slower. It all depends if there's a Northern service from Manchester Airport towards Oxenholme Lake District when you're ready to set off. As others have said perfectly permitted to go via Settle or via Whitehaven if you would like to and have enough time!

Yes but unless you get an additional ticket (as suggested above) it will take a very long time!

Thank you. Because I can use them during peak hours I'd probably set about 6am. It's all so I can do parkruns in the North East! Stay over in a youth hostel if hotels are too dear.

Thank you for your replies. If I get the train at Heald Green at 4.50 I can be in Newcastle before 12.30. Not time critical and I love travelling by train.
