Northern Ticket Machines

Hopefully this is the right place to post this, does anybody know why some of the Northern Ticket machines at various stations have had the contactless card readers removed from them?

I've noticed quite a number of them have had them took out and just plated over.

The old card readers had reached end of life and are in the process of being replaced (already complete for Chiltern, who have the same machines.)

The new card readers are a two-part design instead of three, with the contactless reader integrated into the PIN pad.

As a senior I came to the conclusion a while back that you needed a degree to work them. Sadly I dont do trains much anymore. Fares a baffling.
