Hi all,

Need to pick your wisdom here. I need to travel up to Swinton (South Yorks) on Thursday 21st for business, however I see this a strike day.

As Northern's website is woefully short on any details as to what services it plans to run on strike days, can anyone tell me if trains between Sheffield and Swinton tend to run on Strike Days? Or are these two of the lines that tend to face the axe first?

Feel free to discuss wider expected-service levels for the benefit of other readers too.

Thanks in advance!

The last weekday strike day was Thursday 24 May, the strike timetables are hosted on rackcdn.com in a pdf format

So the way to find strike timetables is to enter the following in Google
"<two or three of the stations on the line you are travelling on>, Thursday 24 May filetype: pdf site:rackcdn.com" (remove space after filetype and replace section in < > with the relevant stations.)

Result: https://be803fe5c416e39d38ae-aa2108...on-timetables/2018-05-24/Hull---Sheffield.pdf

No looking good for trains calling at Swinton (South Yorks.)

So do they put on replacement buses in that instance?

There's no guarantee. They don't have to provide a service at every station if there's industrial action and they focus on the routes or sections of routes which get high patronage or where there's little or no other public transport.

The service is different every time. If anything is running to your station then you are lucky...

The timetable jcollins links to seems to suggest rather more trains running to Hull than there were during the first strikes.

However the trains on the previous strike day before that (9th May) did call at Swinton. So will depend on Northern's resourcing as to whether it is served or not.

There are various service buses that run to Swinton so a Rail Replacement Bus is unlikely if there are no trains.

I note that you say you are travelling on business? I would say that even if some trains are scheduled that it would be a bit of a risk to use them, depending on what time of day you're travelling. If you're working and you can't rearrange the date then perhaps a taxi from Meadowhall is the safest option.

Given there's 3 strikes in 5 days I think more services this time are unlikely, given 'emergency guards' have another role to do as well and there's only 7 days in a week.

Failing that, there are regular buses to Rotherham (217,218,221) which connect to the X1/X10/X78 to Sheffield, or there is a 221 from Swinton to Doncaster every hour or half an hour - can't quite remember
