Northern Staff Privilege card

I have just received my Northern Staff Privilege card and just wondered in layman’s terms how it works? Do I need to still purchase a ticket or just show my card? I know that this is for Northern only but how or do I need a separate card to use on all other TOC's?

I live in Doncaster and will be working in York, so the direct train to York is East Coast. Now I have read somewhere that I cannot use any other TOC's for commuting on a Privilege card is this true?

The crooks of it are, how do I get to York on the train using a Privilege card or will I have to suck it up and pay East Coast the full fare?

NorthernRail dont issue the PRIV card, ATOC do.
So is it the Northern staff pass you have received or the TOC PRIV card from ATOC?

I have received a Northern Staff Privilege and ID card and so has my wife and it states the class of travel as standard with the wording "Valid for concessionary travel only on services provided by Northern Rail Ltd" so assumed that this was my travel card for Northern?

Yes I filled the forms in when I sent my contract back and don’t start until the 20th October but have already received my card.

I am a little confused though as this says Northern on... so will I be getting my other card from ATOC or is this for both?

The blue photocard issued by Northern is what you use for travel on Northern Rail (and Tyne & Wear metro between Sunderland and Newcastle), Merseyrail, Grand Central and Greater Anglia services. You do not need an additional ticket with this and it does not confer a discount on any other operator.

ATOC will send you a different pass for discounted travel on other operators when you have worked for (I think) one month, this process should already be underway.

Privilege Single/Return tickets are not for commuting, but you can apply for a privilege rate season for that purpose when you commence work with a TOC.

After one year of service you can apply for an 'FIP' pass for travel across Europe, details of where you can go and what discounts you can get are available on the ATOC website.

I do find that when i show my Abellio Greater Anglia pass on Merseyrail that it causes some confusion whereas Northern seem more aware of the arangement.

Merseyrail are probably not used to other staff members coming to travel on the best operating company

Yesterday i found one of the Child examples of this Card (well it stays Staff Privilege Card but has the Child Box ticked) I have looked online for details on how to send it back but all i can find is what its use is, any ideas

If you have found someone else's card, there should be details of how to return it to the relevant organisation on the back of the card. If not, take it to a staffed station and hand it in.
