Old Trafford shuttles are sponsored by TfGM. If TfGM won't pay for them to run today, then Northern won't run them. I don't know why the football club can't sponsor them.
Also given it starts at 18:00 not 19:45 or 20:00 like an evening football game would I doubt TfGM will support usual peak services services being de-strengthened or that Network Rail will allow Northern to have extra paths through the Piccadilly-Deansgate section.
They'll be just one unit that'll do that. The weekday unit to form the 17:09 Deansgate-Stoke is the only train that does that since the December 08 timetable change.
It would just be a single 323 - if passengers were unable to board what would Northern do? If they've already bought a ticket then Northern have a responsibility to get them to their destination.
I also don't know what time path the ECS move towards Trafford Park is, it might be a quick turnaround there meaning it can't extend to Old Trafford or it may be a slow turnaround here meaning it can extend to Old Trafford but it would arrive at something like 16:30.
