Today's 16:16 LIV-MIA service is a 156

On Wednesday 24 August the 1532 Lime Street to Wigan was a double Pacer.

This coming Sunday, 4 September, there's a booked ECS move, timed for a Sprinter, 5T02 1505 Leyland British Leyland to Wigan Wallgate Up Carriage Sidings. Anyone know what it's about?

Could they be using a unit to check out the temporary stabling point at Leyland?

Interesting to hear that Scotrail are struggling with the 158's on the Borders railway with an average of a cancellation every two days. They apparently are overheating because they cant handle the gradients in the summer heat with the radiators being unable to provide adequate cooling.

Will the 8 Northern are retaining for Northern Connect encounter similar gradients?

Would you have thought that such a matter as this would have been considered previous to the introduction of the Class 158 units on that line or is it that "summer heat" in that area only being a one in a hundred year happening...

The Borders line is no more hilly than, say, the Hope Valley line.
EMT seem to keep going on Nottingham-Liverpool 158s without problems.

Yes, I presume that it's something to do with the proposed stabling point - I hadn't realised where it was going to be situated, but apparently on the site of the ex-BL sidings.
That, however, doesn't explain why 5T02 is a one-way working - there's no obvious preceding working terminating at 'Leyland British Leyland'.

There is an inward working: 5T01 09.28 Wigan Wallgate Up Sidings to Leyland British Leyland a. 10.23H.

For some reason the inward train didn't appear in the database until a few days after 5T02.

EMT's 158 fleet certainly hasn't been without its problems recently! Although things do seem to have improved a little.

No, it's definitely passenger multiple unit stock, not available to the general public, although that's about all that can be said. Freight and Departmental trains show up as such on RTT.

5T01 still isn't coming up for me on RTT - are you sure we're talking the same date?

Latest I've heard (off ATW traincrew) is that Northern will be getting some 175s with 158s going the other way. Apparently the 175s are really being hammered with the routes they're operating on and just aren't suitable for frequent big stops from 90mph to slow down for the many calls on the Marches route..and this is partly why they've been suffering from corrosion recently. Anyway, the rumour is that initially 3 175s will be going to Northern to be going on with..and 158s going the other way.

For Northern Connect routes then?

I didn't hear when, it may be iminant and just on a short term basis. He did mention for Calder Valley services although I think if it is iminant then it's more likely they will continue to work off Chester DMUd and go on Manchester-Blackpool or Hazel Grove-Preston...and thus release Sprinters to cover the Caldervale diagrams. I don't believe 175s are cleared anywhere east of Manchester and what's more there may be some platform shaving required if they ever did attempt to go east.

Currently, unless I'm mistaken, Blackpool North to Manchester Airport services are either 2x156 or a hired in FTPE 185. Do any 158s work these diagrams?

What units normally work the Blackpool North to Hazel Grove services?

Would 175s only work those diagrams allocated 158s or could we see 156s being replaced by 175s?

Except for those 175s allocated to FTPE, surely there are some destinations under the current Arriva Northern franchise that haven't seen a Class 175 unit since the former First North Western franchise?

How does frequent stop starting cause bodyside corrosion?

He was referring more about having to brake frequently from high speed, then went on to mention about the corrosion and how one 3-car unit had been running around as a 2-car as a result. May have misunderstood a bit but the guy works on the units so he must have a fair idea. He basically said they're being hammered into the ground on their current routes and that ATW are after 158s to take over some of their duties.
