Northern rolling stock changes post electrification

Last reported as stored at Wolverton. Been there since March 16th.

My family and I did NLW / MIA on a 156 with the return on a 319 (first time on one for me) and were surprised that units on the Airport run don't have luggage space. I appreciate that units can cover any diagram but having 2+3 seating is not good for people with large cases in the morning rush hour. The 156 to the airport was busy (14:37) until Piccadilly and we struggled to store our luggage until they alighted.
The return unit was almost empty (12:40 to LIV) but our cases and bags took up 2x3 seats. It's a good job that not many people use the train to/from the airport. I can't imagine what it would be like in the morning rush trying to board with lots of cases and not good for the commuters too.

The luggage racks that were being referred to by edwin_m are fitted to the 319/2 and 319/4 stock. They are vertical racks and have been fitted in place of the single longtitudonal seats adjacent to the doors. These have space at both floor level and waist height for heavy cases. You can see them in this picture:

Maybe Northern will retrospectively fit the racks at some point, unless they (eventually) get some /2s or /4s when they are released by Govia.

Just an afterthought, - the racks don't really cost seating capacity when the train is full as it is not uncommon for passengers to sit in the racks during crush loading.

Northern is only getting 319/3. Don't forget the whole 319 is due to visit Wolverton for mods regardless of which operator users them. For example 319008 was booked to Wolverton this morning.

Travelling on 321s which have a fairly similar seating layout to 319s, I can only get away with sitting with my suitcase if it's an almost entirely empty off-peak service, as it takes up 5 seats - one for me and 2+2 for the suitcase blocking the entire footwell. Anything other than the very quietest trains I stand in the vestibule. Not a huge issue for a 25 minute journey as I often have to do the same for 2 hours on the East Coast service I use prior.

I saw it on Saturday.

I was on it, as it worked the 17:13 LIV to MIA service.

Am just thinking, theres no Class 319s pathed to be out on Saturdays, Do you mean you saw it on Monday? As thats when i first saw it but forgot to mention it on here

No, it was definitely on Saturday.

361 was the one out on Saturday,a friend of mine drove his first one to the airport that day . The diagram on Sat should see it forming the first trip to Wigan and back and then on all day MIA work.

Considering the stocks age Northern have done a good job in refreshing them and the passengers and staff do like them. It always makes me laugh though when I see the "Northern Electrics" posters everywhere when on the south side of Manchester we have had "Electrics" for many many many years.

I would say it'd make sense to redo the 323s, 321/9s etc. in the Northern Electrics livery since it's the same franchise, but if it's up for renewal soon I can see the point in not bothering. If the new TOC want to make a big deal about the new electrification then I'm sure they can carry it on. As night and day as the difference may be between a 319 and a contemporary EMU, especially a Desiro (or hopefully also the AT200) I have to admit, sitting in the trailer car of a 319 the other morning I thought 'man, imagine how much quieter this is going to be than a 150 or a Pacer!'

I agree. Having been used to 319s for years on Thameslink, I travelled on one from MIA to LIV. They are fine for that journey, - more than fast enough, acceleration much faster than a Sprinter and no thrash and vibration. Most of the complaints on here are from those who have experienced newer trains like the TPS 350/4s and think that they should be provided for all services. The line is a basic regional route with relatively minor commuter traffic. The 319s have been doing much more than that for over two decades.
Northern should however fit the luggage racks as per the 319/4s as MIA traffic will justify it.

Can't disagree there, I saw a 319 at Lime Street on Monday (I assume 1513 to Manchester Airport, as I was departing on 1504 to Birmingham New Street) and even just what I briefly saw looked good!

It will return with the white livery. The work is done by Porterbrook not the TOC.

The 319/2 fleet is the same as the 319/4 diagram wise to south the 319s now being out numbered by the Electrostars, they can turn up anywhere.
