Anyone caught up in the incident yesterday when a 319 sat down at probably the worst time and place possible - platform 14 at Piccadilly at 1600?

Northern should never have been awarded the franchise - just shows that the government doesn't know what it is doing. ;)

And how the hell does one train failure prove this? You do really every train will break down at some point?

Gen is first 319 Liverpool - Wigan service will be 0600 LIV - WGN and 0703 WGN -LIV return this Saturday.
The unit will then form the 0816 LIV- MIA and work that circuit for the rest of the day.

It's a start folks!

Apologies but the wink is there and is a reference to another thread where that very same reaction has been used due to one failure.

Interestingly northern themselves havent decided whether they will convert the stoppers or the expresses first, saying they have 40 drivers to train and it will depend on how many drivers and units they have ready by May.

All except 3 drivers long term unavailable have been trained at liverpool now out of 70 i think it was.

319361 doing the honours on that diagram. 319365 is also working the LIV - MIA diagram one hour behind 361.

i wqas in Liverpool at 23:00 :( and there was a lightly loaded 319 on i guess platform 6? yet i had a double 156 on the Wigan route and just scruffy ex Northern Spirit Units the FNW Variety are so much better for crush loaded services

So you were on a 4 car train with around 300 seats in 2+2 formation and you were disappointed you didn't get a 4 car train with around 300 seats in 3+2 because your service was busier?

When it's a crush load, the interiors of all 156s the country over are much of a muchness. I'd guess he had a double 150?

My family and I did NLW / MIA on a 156 with the return on a 319 (first time on one for me) and were surprised that units on the Airport run don't have luggage space. I appreciate that units can cover any diagram but having 2+3 seating is not good for people with large cases in the morning rush hour. The 156 to the airport was busy (14:37) until Piccadilly and we struggled to store our luggage until they alighted.
The return unit was almost empty (12:40 to LIV) but our cases and bags took up 2x3 seats. It's a good job that not many people use the train to/from the airport. I can't imagine what it would be like in the morning rush trying to board with lots of cases and not good for the commuters too.

319s serve Luton and Gatwick on the Thameslink route and I thought they were provided with reasonable luggage racks but maybe that is another sub-class. Are there problems with bags getting in the way in the South and have racks been removed during the refurbishment for Northern?

I don't think the seating layout has been altered since moving north.
There is actually plenty of space for bags between the seat backs (and in full view, unlike stacks), but only up to a certain size of bag.
Us northerners might not be used to stowing stuff between seats yet.

156s probably have less space between the seats but probably more space in the vestibule/bike area at one end of the set.

I've been saying for a while more luggage space needed to be a higher priority than significantly increasing the number of seats.

Between some seats the space is blocked off - see bottom right here: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9b/319003_DTSO_Internal.JPG so your argument only works for people not travelling in large groups with small items of luggage who are able to sit in a seat where the space isn't blocked off.

No way was I lifting bags onto the luggage racks with people sitting underneath. BA flights allow hand luggage up to 23kg (ours weren't that heavy) and I wouldn't like one of them to fall off the shelf.
It was the large suitcases that were the problem. As I mentioned, they took up 6 seats on the 319 although I managed to fit them on 4 on the 156. We couldn't have left them by the doors as it would have made it difficult for the commuters to get past at Oxford Road and Piccadilly. In our carriage there were 6 other passengers with cases who all breathed a sigh of relief once they commuters got off at Pic!
