which 377s are we intending to send to SE? Hopefully they dont include 377101-120 (with their 2x2 seats throughout..)

No announcement has been made yet buts it 25 units not 20.

There's all sorts of factors to take in to consideration, such as you could run a service every 20 minutes using 4 carriages or one every 15 minutes using 3 carriages, how much infrastructure alterations are required for longer trains, whether a consistent fleet can be used for different routes etc.

Alex Hynes recently said 4 car EMUs on the Liverpool-Manchester route will make it easier for revenue collection as they will be equipped so that the conductor doesn't have to return to the back of the train to make an announcement or to release the doors.

There's also the advantage of where 319s replace formations including a 150/1 or a 142 that the conductor can walk from one end to the other. However, as neither the 319s or 323s have corridor connectors at present if longer term Northern run doubled up EMUs then the problem they are solving now may re-appear in a few years time.

Very true. Short term the situation is improving on the lines the 319s are introduced with Northern's fleet growing and revenue protection becoming easier/possible.

I'd hope that if doubling up from 8 cars is needed then they'd be a case for new fleet with gangways (we should dismiss the revenue part of the case with gangwayed units) and cascade the 319s onto other routes further displacing units within the franchise.

A good point. Once the Lancashire Electrification is complete storage would be available at Allerton, Stockport, Blackpool North, and Preston. Also it is to be hoped that the sidings at Manchester Victoria would be wired. Extending the wires the short distance from Miles Platting to Newton Heath could allow storage there. Also there will be overnight storage in the bays at Preston and Wigan Wallgate.

Is there not a problem with unguarded rolling stock being subjected to graffiti application at stabling points away from normally patrolled areas ?

Isn't that a problem anywhere including the South East? 319361 was attacked after arrival at Allerton. Hence it was moved inside until the OHLE had been repaired,

Yes. Bellingham sidings used to be a favourite. The siding at Sevenoaks is certainly popular with the sprayers too as well as those at Ashford I believe.

Some paths in for this week which look like 319 test runs of some sort.

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/advanced/XAL/2014/09/09/0000-2359?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt

5Z19 - 1218 Allerton to Crewe
5Z20 - 1336 Crewe to Allerton
5Z21 - 1526 Allerton to Crewe
5Z22 - 1646 Crewe to Allerton

Heard they're cleared for the route booked so these may run, but haven't today yet.

Yes, those are training runs to allow Lime Street drivers (route-conducted by Lime Street instructor drivers) to amass the required practical handling hours on the 319 units which they need, along with full traction knowledge, in order to pass out on them.

I dont mind 365s either, very nice trains. We will have the pick of the bunch from a silly amount of electric trains in about 5 or 6 years.

From famine to absolute glut!

315s. 321s, 317s, 319s, 365s, 387s? Well who knows.

You never know, they may change the seating...
I remember them 20 years ago on routes south of the Thames. The seats were virtually unusable when the trains were crowded because the designers made the seat backs slope excessively, forgetting that people can't share leg room with the person sitting opposite.

Hunslet-Barclay did something similar thing in the late 1990s when they refurbished the first set First North Western 150s with facing seats. If someone's sat opposite you then you can't move your legs but it doesn't stop the seats being filled on a busy loading e.g. http://www.fixmytransport.com/files...images/170/max/20121029_103030.jpg?1351512958

Only around 3 months to wait until the 319s start service then hopefully! Going to be losing a fair bit of the DMU roar at Lime Street mind...
