Must be TPEs' next stage of Eco-mode operation: Just switch off all the engines altogether and let the passengers do the work!:D It'll be a huge saving on fuel costs that they can trumpet about in a years time... ;)

Its brilliant - getting rid of all those heavy engines underneath the 185s might make them an acceptable weight too - soon travelling Transpennine will be equivalent to those "galley ships" of slaves all rowing together...

I'm curious to know why the first round trip of the day on the Barton line is operated by a TPE 185 when it is actually a Northern Rail line served for the rest of each day by 153's.

Lack of Northern staff/stock in the area at that time in the morning?

There were similar things in the past, e.g. Central Trains running Norwich - Great Yarmouth services on behalf of Anglia - the kind of "joined up thinking" that we used to take forgranted under BR.

See also Northern services between Hull and Scarborough being covered by TPE drivers and guards so Northern don't have to send crews around East Yorkshire via Taxi to cover the shifts as well as Scotrail and Northern sharing duties between Glasgow and Newcastle via Carlise. I wonder if there is anywhere else where it might make sense for one TOCs staff to operate another TOCs train/service?

I know things are bad but I sincerely hope that your last three words in your quote above are somewhat incorrect and that you meant to say "move down the train."...

Yes. That's actually Northern's solution for when a Pacer is packed and can't move off because of the weight.

Thank you for taking my comment in good spirit. Incidentally, I know that Pacers have been with us for years and years and are "part of the furniture" up here in "Northern-land", but I was somewhat taken aback to find a "Pacer Replacement" thread now appearing on the Infrastructure Forum.

Is this trying to tell us something about their future longevity that we do not know..
