That isn't something I would find out until names start appearing in the allotted spaces on each course on the wall planner, only HR would have the info until then. I would be more likely to find out on threads on this forum who has been successful - two of my last three trainees had posted on here (or the other threads from last year) that they had passed everything & been given start dates, months before they even met me or the other DIs, this thread or those like it seem to be a rite of passage for trainees and us DIs (and no doubt DMs & HR) have a nosy every now and then to see who is in the pipeline.

Jimmy Key, glad it is all sorted now and hopefully see you in a couple of months for front-end turns etc and all that follows - if you are wondering who I am think back to last Feb in Bolton. I have chatted with you a few times about going main line since then, most recently when I was on shed the other week cadging a lift down to Vic.
Ah yes, penny's dropped after a bit of thinking. Looking forward to getting off these 11 nights and beyond that 902 signal, and as you state, possibly under your instruction.

Yes mate internal. Depot driver. Got the news confirmed yesterday.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

So did I mate. Was a discrepancy with regards psychometric test. Got back dated on the 11th hour to sit it. Passed, now on the june trip.

Ah I was wondering why I didn't see you on the course that started last month, glad you have a proper start date now. I've no clue where they are going to put these courses at Bolton though, there is already 2 Drivers and 1 Conductor course running at the moment with another 2 courses (driver/conductor) starting on the 2nd of June. Although my course ends in June.

Llama, are you an instructor at Vic?

Not sure about depot drivers, they are not trained by mainline driver instructors once they leave classroom based training at Bolton (training school).

So far this year courses have started in Jan, Feb and April. There is one trainee driver course planned for June, at least two other courses planned for later this year last time I checked, possibly Sept & Nov, I can't remember. Based on figures available at the time, the numbers of trainees required for each depot on each course are allocated up to 12 months in advance, and updated at intervals. All trainee numbers for each depot are subject to adjustment depending how the May '14 diagrams affect depot establishments once finalised, and obviously any existing drivers leaving the company in the interim. These diagram changes are the biggest recast since the Dec '08 change.

Thanks Llama. I had spoken with HR last week to get an update and they said they were unaware at that time, but waiting for a few assessment results to come through and the DM's to pass on names. It was a long shot, but I guess it's sit on bum and just be patient still lol. Thanks for getting back to us, all the same, hopefully see some of you soon.

Somebody recently asked HR if it's true that our original DM test scores run out after 6 months, for some of us that would be July. The answer was yes, however they expect all talent pool candidates to be allocated to places before then, clearly that won't be the case?

Not sure how many people are actually waiting in the talent pool, each class of trainees has up to twelve in it, although the most trainees destined for the same depot within any class has usually been around six.
It may be (speculating here) that if these May diagram changes turn out to need a higher influx of trainees another class may be pencilled in, I suspect there were twelve places already on the June course spread across several depots. Some courses run with fewer trainees, the lowest number in a single class I have known was just three trainees.

If that is accurate then yes, clearly some are likely to need re-interviewing if their DM interview results lapse before a job offer is made, unless something changes.

As I suspected, so either it's not 60 in the pool or the lady at HR either wasn't sure of the answer or didn't fancy breaking the news

Not wanting to undermine what HR are saying on here, they are the ones with all the info ie talent pool numbers, interview dates etc, and nevertheless there is nothing stopping them organising another quick round of DM interviews if necessary.

I would be surprised if that figure of 60 in the talent pool is accurate though to be honest, seems extremely high, and if it is accurate I suspect that might be for the whole company.

Recruitment is far heavier on the west than the east though at the moment, and it is not unknown for Leeds training school to reduce pressure on Bolton by training a class of trainees that would otherwise have done their classroom training at Bolton.

There has to be a measured degree of trainee driver recruitment, it is no good Bolton (& Leeds) churning out class after class if they are only going to hit a bottleneck when they have finished in the classroom and go to their depots only to find there is no instructor or no DM available, leaving trainees sitting around waiting for weeks or even months. This has happened several times over the years.

When trainees leave the classroom they need up to a week on shed doing depot-specific traction conversions with an instructor, then fifteen hours driving time with a DM to assess suitability to continue and capability of trainee to work well under close 1-1 instruction. Only then will the trainee be allocated an instructor, who they will spend nominally twelve weeks with (usually more like fifteen). Trainees need regular DM reviews whilst training, the FCA (full competency assessment - aka passout) takes up to a fortnight with a DM, and then once qualified the DM assessments come thick and fast every few weeks. All of this adds to already heavy workloads so it is important that the DIs and DMs can cope for over two years (by when a trainee will have become a qualified driver with two years driving experience and hopefully gone on to the minimal assessment plan) with the numbers of bodies coming out of the training schools.

You won't go for the med until you have been offered the job, then it can be before or after you start, things seem to be moving a bit now so hopefully it won't be too long await for you :D

The west side May '14 driver diagrams must be finalised by this Thurs, so if some course places are contingent on the number of extra drivers required across the business, hopefully things may begin to move along soon.

Have you got any info regarding the Trainee Conductor role or do you only deal with Drivers?
