Has anyone else had this before? A letter with my mums maiden name (which she hasn’t used in over 10 years) was delivered to my grandads house (where she hasn’t lived for over 15 years).

The letter from Northern Rail said she had travel from New Pudsey to Leeds without paying on Thursday 16th October which she can’t have been because she was working that day plus how can you get through the barriers at Leeds without a ticket.

Says there is an outstanding fine of £180 and if she didn’t pay it’s going to court. Has this happened to anyone or does anyone have any advice?

My advice is for your Mum to contact Northern and advise them that she didn't make the journey (with evidence she was in work elsewhere).

I suspect that someone she knew 15+ years ago was involved and gave your Mum's details when caught.

It is quite common for people to give friends or acquaintances details when caught and one of the experts should be along sometime to tell you how to clear the matter up. The only, to my eyes, unusual detail is how out of date the details given were, but that shouldn’t be a problem.

Reply in writing to the railway clearly stating it wasn’t her and that she’d left that address x years ago.

If proof of being at work can be provided enclose it.

Keep copies of everything.

The inspector might have taken a basic description of the person stopped who gave the deatails. It’s therefore possible the railway might ask for a copy of photo id for your mum to check against that record in order to verify her story. But you could wait and see if they do or offer to provide it to them if required.

Head back here for more advice as and when or if needed.

Post a draft of your mums reply here before sending it to northern if you want it checked. Keep it polite brief and clear.

Also do some basic checks that your mum is correctly on electoral register at her current address and not on the register at grandads address. Contact the local councils concerned to check those records.
