Northern Rail services to Glasgow

I've noticed that some services from Newcastle-Glasgow are showing as Operated by Northern Rail,

Mainly:

This Train is operated by Northern.

Merseyrail staff get free travel on ALL 'Northern Rail Services'. So by reading the LDBs, I would assume that a Merseyrail staff pass would be valid on these services to Glasgow.

However, it would appear that it is First ScotRail staff who take over this 'Northern' train to Glasgow Central- with it being announced on board as a 'First Scotrail' Service to Glasgow. It is also a First ScotRail liveried Class 156.

Now, if someone had a pass valid on Northern, be it one of the complimentary day passes they issue, a Merseyrail pass, Northern Rail Station Adoption pass etc, would it be reasonable and correct to assume that these travel documents should be accepted on these services?

Probably not as you correctly state it is a Scotrail unit and Scotrail staff. In fact after they leave Carlisle you won't hear northern mentioned at all.

My point is, however, that the National Rail Timetable, Staff LDBs and Journey Planners all list this as a Northern Rail service. It isn't technically a ScotRail service, just staffed by them as far as I can tell.

No it is a Scotrail service, it is just the way the journey planners work, if you look going the otherway you have the same situation it is a Scotrail service all the way to Newcastle.

Under BR this used to be a Scotrail service, I wonder why it is the only one that survived privatisation.

I'd say you should be able to use it, as everywhere says its an NT service, but what do I know

Conversely, when these services operate in the opposite direction, Glasgow central to newcastle central, they are listed as scotrail services, though in scotrail's timetable it lists all these services as jointly operated by first scotrail and northern.

Been there, done that.

Read the historic small print in yr employment contract and all amendments notified. They tell all. What you are entitled to may not be the same as a colleague employed the next day. This is a fact, not discrimination.

I expect yr original employment contract will be yr best and I hope only starter.

I suggest that if you have contracts pre "privatisation", establish your credentials and then submit your claims accordingly.That said, if you prefer or have a union advising an alternative path then feel free to follow it.

By rights its a Scotrail service throughout but is considered a joint service operated by Scotrail between Glasgow and Carlisle then Northern between Carlisle and Newcastle. Northern and Scotrail passes would be valid on the respective halves. I found this out when I used my pass from Newcastle using the Glasgow service to Carlisle.

You may be able to get to Glasgow for free... but don't expect a free ride back south again

As far as the Franchise Agreements are concerned, and legally, these services are Northern between Newcastle and Carlisle and Scotrail between Carlisle and Scotland. This also applies to the 05:27 Carlisle – Dumfries and 06:17 Dumfries – Newcastle which Northern provide the Unit and Crew for its entirety.

I last year travelled from Stranraer to Carlisle on a Scotrail service that continued onto Newcastle via the Tyne Valley. It was announced as Scotrail. Must say it was one journey i wouldnt repeat out of choice. Almost 4 hours on a 156 with scenery that never seemed to change much & no trolley even though it was pretty busy & having come off the HSS from Belfast, would have been most welcome. I dont think this through train runs anymore as on arrival at Carlisle only a couple of passengers remained on board.

I think I remember hearing or seeing somewhere that, as pointed out already it is a joint service between Scotrail and Northern, BUT I remember reading that it is a Scotrail Service as far as a certain point, and then a Northern Service from another point, thus the different operators.

I'm not sure about the Glasgow Train, but the train I read about was heading to Stranraer.

The buck stops at Carlisle as has been said. Wonder if you would have been able to use your pass when the Newcastle - Stranraer services were running? Now that you have to change, you won't be able to now.
