All members received an email as far as I know - I seem to recall it had grown too large for the staff to maintain, as well as the costs associated with such, and as a result, yes, it has closed down unfortunately.

I wasn't a member, but I did occasionally browse the forum, and did notice there was a message saying that the forum would be closing some time in June. It cited a number of reasons, although I thought one of them was its decline in use rather than it becoming too large as MattE2010 thought - I may be wrong though, as I didn't read it in too much detail.

You could always start posting here instead. :P

Turns out neither of us were correct TBW! ;) The email was:

To Our Members Past and Present

Northern Railways started off in August 2005 after group of like minded
people came together to discuss, debate and engage on all matters on the
Iron Road. Our vision was a forum led on discussion and ideas and fun. We
are proud to say that for the most part we achieved that, on this current
version of the forum which we have been on since 2009 we have had over
150,000 posts and over 10,000 topics.

...

Unfortunately, times change, lives change and we have to move forward, and
we have taken the joint decision that from 13th June 2013, Northern
Railways will close it's doors.

In eight years, we have changed a lot with many of us achieving careers and feats
that we could have never dreamed of when we started. However, these changes have
affected our abilities to keep this forum going. Time and motivation have become limited
for the team as our lives have become busier keeping parts of the railway network going.

...

Lack of time on the part of the forum staff was our main reason for closure along with the costs (the forum was always ad free). Lack of, or too much usage, of the forum wasn't a massive issue.
