Do Northern Rail drivers have to memorise and drive every route or do they stick to some of their own routes?

Just wondering

Depends on there home Depot, Newcastle drivers do...

Newcastle to Chathill
Newcastle to Carlisle
Newcastle to Darlington then onto Saltburn
Newcastle to Nunthorpe via Hartlepool/Middlesbrough

Darlington drivers do similar but not Chathill and Carlisle but Bishop and Whitby

It's the same in every company. Each depot had its own allocation of work (route card) and will stick to those routes and services. I don't sign every route my TOC works over and the amount of the network covered means I simply wouldn't be able to.

Also depends what "link" you go in at the depot...not every driver at a particular depot will sign all routes at that depot or traction for that matter

Does anyone know if Northern have changed their stance on actively encouraging MDD to move onto mainline driving.

Obsessing even. I don't think you'll be happy until you get a signed note from God promising MDD to mainline driver progression as guaranteed :D

No not at all, thats the problem on here, you hear one thing from one post then something different from another. Its just general interest as already have a trainee position in leeds.

From what I've gleaned on this forum over the years, actively seeking an MDD role as a stepping stone to mainline is frowned on by Northern ( or the depot management anyway), be careful you don't make yourself too easily identifiable. If you're an internal can you not just wait till trainee mainline jobs come along? Risks and gambles making career choices I know but I don't think you'll get a definitive answer on here. Personally I'd jump at a guaranteed MDD role but that's just me.
