I have recently got a letter from the debt recovery and prosecutions unit asking for details of why i did not buy a fare.
I juat want to ask anyone who this has happenned to before, how long does it take for them to get back to you after i reply to it.

Highly variable, dependant on workload and capacity to process that workload, rather than anything arising from the content of your reply, but likely to be a few months. Expect 3 - 4 months.

The OP apparently doesn't want any advice - the answer DaveNewcastle provided will apparently suffice. My guess is that (s)he knows that they are in the wrong.

Railway Companies do not prosecute juniors for incidents of one-off low value fare evasion in my experience. However, I am aware of incidents which have occurred within six months of the passenger reaching adult age and allowing the passenger to reach adulthood before bringing the offence to Court, by which point the Prosecution can succeed.

There have been threads on here about it, but I'm not able to search for them right now.
I'm happy to answer questions in a piecemeal manner if you don't want to divulge details, though the answers might not be as useful to you as they could be if you provided more factual details. The most important question to me is not what you did, but what evidence does the Railway Company have against you?

Persons under 18 may be prosecuted in the Youth Courts but it is unlikely for the failure to pay a one-off, low-value railway fare. See Youth Court and the related pages for more information.

I bought it with cash as I am 14 and I don't have the ticket any more as it has been 2 months. Should I reply to the letter or should I just ring up. I cant let this drag on as it will interfere with my school exams which start in September. Is there any way to get the whole situation sorted on the phone so it does not take ages and if so, what should we say on the phone.

This is possibly where a parental letter apologising for their sons actions, but at the same time suggesting that prolonged contact is interfering with the studies of their 14 year old son could be a good idea.

Where did you buy the ticket? What time and date? Who sold it to you?

They will be able to get proof of purchase if you can recall the date/time and where you bought it.

Indeed, but as the OP has already stated they don't have that ticket. Given they paid by cash, I'm not sure what proof of purchase can possibly be obtained.

Oh, I'm not disputing that. Just 445driver's assertion that proof of purchase had no bearing or relevance, when it had been specifically asked for by the TOC.

It doesn't have any bearing in this case, which is what I am answering, I will leave all the different scenarios (which will be irrelevant) to others!
