Northern Rail Conductor Vacancy 2013

Hi

I applied for one of three vacancies for conductors in Skipton on 24th April, went for an interview and then passed the psychometric tests in mid June, I haven't had the medical yet.

I was informed that my application was being put on hold.

I received the following email when I asked them for an update;

Hi Andrew

We recruit to a train crew plan which is subject to change; at present I am unable to confirm the start date.

We will be in touch as soon as we have any further information.

We would like to thank you for your patience and continued interest in Northern Rail.

The Recruitment Team

So I'm still none the wiser as to wether I have got the job subject to passing a medical or not or when the start date could be.

Advice anyone?

I believe, they are waiting for the vacancies to come up. There may be all sorts of reason, people transfering between the depos, guards not going driving or not moving to different jobs, as hr expected or god knows what else.
Just wait for them to come back to you. They will.

I am in the exact same position with East Coast. This is common practice in the rail industry. Don't worry, they still want to take you on and at least they are being honest about not knowing when you can start instead of giving you false hope.

Cheers guys, why is it that they advertise three posts the keep everyone on hold?

If the positions aren't there why advertise?

It's better to look at it a different way. They invite all prospective candidates to the assessment centre and assess them all on a particular criteria. More often than not more candidates than there are jobs will meet or exceed the criteria. Rather than turning everyone away the place all successful applicants into the talent pool and take them on when new vacancies arise. It's good for them because it saves them having to do another full blown recruitment campaign and its good for us because we don't just get told to go on our way like many other companies would. I completely understand your frustration, believe me I have it as well, but when you do start with them you'll look back and think that it was good of them to keep you in the pool and give you a job when they could.

What will happen after six months of waiting, would I need to do it all again?
