Northern rail conductor shifts

Good morning! I am currently going through the recruitment process for a northern rail conductor. Does anybody know exactly what the shift pattern is?? I have heard you only work 4 or 5 days in a row? Thank you simon

Which area have you applied for? I put in app for Trainee Conductor Leeds/Skipton to go into talent pool, but still havent heard anything

Its very much depot dependant. For example Piccadilly's earliest start is 4am on the early shift and then on lates the latest finish is around 2am which works on a 24 hour rota or "Link". On the west Sundays are outside of the working week and you tend to get a long weekend every 4 weeks

No because different depots will have different shifts, most will have earlies, middles and lates, some will also have nights. Most will have more than one link so that will have a bearing on what you actually work, etc etc.
Some will have earliest start at 3AM others wont start until 5AM, some will have their latest shift finishing around midnight others it might be 2AM.
It really isnt a question that can be answered unless we know what depot it is and what link you are going in.

JJP87, I remember them advertising for Hull. I didnt apply for that because I live in too far away and Northern wont allowyou to apply for a similar position if you already have a live application. Good luck x

There will be a number of things that will determine your pay (East get a different deal to West). Shift times vary from depot to depot. Man Vic's earliest is around 4am for guards, but Liverpool Lime St has a 03:12 start.

Don't know if this is the case for all depots, but most of the ones I know on the west are divided into links. The newbies start in the bottom link and when vacancies become available in the top links, they move up based on seniority. Most of the time you find the bottom links get the dogs end of the shifts, but as most of them say, "We've all been there"

Good luck to those applying! I know these talent pools seem frustrating, but it'll be worth it in the end and I think there will be a big recruitment drive into next year.

Good luck to all those applying, on third week of training for Skipton conductor and loving every minute.

As mentioned above, have patience with the talent pool as its worth it in the end, next course is in October for area east.

I have applied to the sheffield depo and currently in the talent pool. It is frustrating waiting for a course but by the sounds of it worth the wait. Thanks for all the replies and advice, simon

Just had the email today from Northern didnt get onto next stage for Trainee conductor Leeds or Skipton. Not down hearted about this, because I forgot that I applied for it due to applying for other railway roles. Hope those who have applied have better luck than me x
