Northern Rail Conductor Interview

I have an interview coming up with Northern Rail for a conductor role based at Liverpool. The interview is an hour long and it will be competency based questions. Can anyone give me any ideas on the sort of questions that may pop up? Im obviously keen to get this role and would like to prepare for it as best that I can.......

My advice (if you haven’t already done so) is to go through the essential criteria on the advert.

So if the advert says ‘We need someone who can communicate clearly and make effective decisions under pressure’ you will need to prepare a competency answer for each of these points.

Make sure you use the STAR model as this will help you prepare your answers fully and in a logical format.

Likely questions to prepare for:-

Give a time when you've dealt with a/an:
difficult situation/emergency/difficult customer.

Give an example of when you've exceeded a customer's expectations

What do you think the role of conductor involves?

What do you think good customer service is?

Give an example of when you've had to make a quick decision

You will be asked about 5 or 6 of this type of question it's likely 3 or 4 of them will be questions I've mentioned above. As has been said use the STAR method (Google if unsure). Good luck

My interview is on Microsoft Teams....would it be deemed acceptable to have my notes whilst doing the interview so that I can relate to them?

Re: having notes to hand I think this would be acceptable. I have taken printed copies of my notes to successful job interviews in the past, my thinking being; it can't hurt to show that you are well organised and done the necessary preparation.

Hi RS hopefully your interview went well. I just got email to confirm I met the criteria after the interview stage but unfortunately wasn't chosen for the current training course so will be on list for 9 months until a place/job is available in next training course. Have u had a reply yet?

Thanks SherwoodBandit! Was bit disappointed I didn't get on a training course and start date right away but hopefully soon. Tbh what scrapy has posted was pretty what they asked. I prepped by writing them down so it's more structured answer to the questions. I would say mention bout how you like the new direction the company is taking and the promo videos & adverts aswel compared to when it was privately owned. Good luck with your interview mate and keep us informed how you do, hopefully we bump into each other in work lol

I was asked on an interview if I had any notes out as it is their rules for interview are no notes.

Ye sorry I didn't answer that question but I just assumed you would know that tbh. It would defeat the object of a in-person interview if you are reading from a piece of paper.

I’ve had a few emails saying The Childs Room then the Arena Room on floor 4 of Piccadilly Stn but I’m a bit stuck on how to get to floor 4 as there isn’t any further info. The Arena Room makes me think Victoria instead but could anyone shed some light please?
