Just over seven hundred extra seats (7 x 142s) is not to be sniffed at in the currently hopeless conditions for train orders we are witnessing, whatever form they come in.

Seven thirty metre trains is a lot more significant than a single 153, to be fair

Having monitored the west cumbrian coast line for the past few years, i've watched the rise in passenger traffic with facination, the rate at which passenger traffic has risen has been fantastic, with an increase in traffic going beyond all expectations, it was'nt so very long ago that the trains south of whitehaven were as few as 4 a day and talk of closing the whitehaven-millom section to passenger traffic and leaving it freight only, now its up to at least 10 each way and rising each year, so any new stock is more than welcome, but we always seem to be at the end of the cascade !
The real improvements that need to take place are the introduction of later trains (ie after 7pm at night south of whitehaven) and the introduction of a much improved sunday service, because 3 a day each way between whitehaven and carlisle is way too inadequate

The same situation exists on EMT and their Derby-Crewe 153. An awful, awful journey.
Totally agree. It's an unacceptable situation, especially when you consider how many Turbostar and 153 units sit idle all or most of the day in the Western half of the former region!

It deserves a mention in the local papers serving the route as many of the former passengers may have decided to use other modes of transport after not being able to get on. Lets get this in perspective its a release in a local newspaper not The Sun etc.

If we are mentionning BR, then they have to take half the blame for this problem form cutting most of the 155s down to 153s as a cost cutting measure
Not like they really had a lot of other options. Remember the whole of BR was run on a small fraction of the budget the myriad of bankers and shareholders now enjoy, even when you consider inflation!

They have nothing else. The two car 158s can't cope with the Liverpool - Norwich service either. EMT have no new stock on the horizon, no electrification plans for their routes and the only comfort is that new trains for other TOCs (LM 172s etc) may mean they get some more cascaded stock (as well as the four 156s they are getting from Northern).

I don't know where EMT could find spare DMUs to run longer Derby - Crewe trains (though I agree that they are needed).
The prospect of a 37/47+Mk2+DBSO was discussed. Sort of proves how diar the whole situation is really.

Its a bit like the "lets get Irish Mk3s to the UK" ideas. It sounds okay, but its scraping the barrel when you consider how much money is floating around UK railways at the moment... :|

Yes, the EMT Derby - Crewe 153s are rather cramped at times, especially on Saturdays with the Alton Towers traffic to Uttoxeter.

Sad when you consider that Central Trains would sometimes put turbostars on the route. :-x But EMT are stretched already...

CT's usual traction for Crewe-Derby was 150s after it was made a local service instead of a CityLink service. However, for some reason DfT gave LM one of the best franchise deals that have been given out and EMT got short changed because of it.

Well, a 150 is still better than what is currently used. I agree EMT was definitely short changed!

Looking at the ATOC figures for station usage for 09/10, I think nearly all of the stations saw a rise in passenger numbers (how much this was down to the floods is anyone's guess). Could do with more than one extra unit but then again that could be said of lots of areas in Northern land.
