The bottom line is companies do not take on contracts that they think will generate them a loss.

Corrected.

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
An annual pay rise of RPI +0.1% sounds reasonable to me - it's guaranteed to see pay increase faster than inflation, it'd avoid the predictable hassle of renegotiating salary each year (with the threat of strikes)...

As a non-rail employee, I think that it sounds a reasonable enough figure, and is in line with ticket prices. Makes sense to me.

Ticket prices are going up currently in line with RPI (albeit with the previous July's RPI), so it's better than current ticket price increases. Possibly the RPI they want to base the wage increase on?

But plans are to increase that back to RPI+1% in 2021. Let me see, how many years time is that?

When Arriva took over, part of me thought they would offer a basic year or two year deal then get themselves settled ready to sort out the harmonisation and possible Sunday working in 2018.

Instead they've kept the Abellio deadwood and continued business as normal when it comes to industrial relations.

Yes they are, but striking over this matter is the wrong way of going about it.

An official work to rule will be much more effective. No rest days, no extra Sundays, no overtime, no favours.

Part of the ballot will also be whether or not to work to rule. At present there is a RDW agreement in place between Aslef and Northern. Aslef cannot just terminate that without listening to their members which they will also be doing at the same time.

I appreciate a strike may not go down well with people but what else are The Northern staff to do? They want a pay rise like everyone else within the railway industry but quite rightly will not accept what is being put on the table.

Well pay negotiations often drag on for many months, so a strike this early seems, shall we put it, less than reasonable?

....If Northern employees don't like being on lower pay than other TOCs they can always move to other TOCs - I'm sure Southern would welcome them with open arms!

Perhaps Northern staff should start saying that when everyone else starts moaning about pay freezes?

It does beg the question, if franchises like Northern are such bad loss makers that have to be propped up by grants / subsidies, why on Earth do companies line up to bid for them let alone offer substantial investment?....

I believe most franchises can take 3% of ticket revenue as profit, even if they receive subsidy from Government.

...Northern said "it is a 4 year deal or nothing at all, we are not prepared to agree to anything less than a 3 to 4 year multi year deal"....

Bit of an odd comment really, considering their initial offer could have been just 2 years with the option of a third, but perhaps they thought they had a way to make sure it went to three years.

....If there are likely to be major changes to working practices, T&Cs etc I wouldn't want to commit to a four year deal without at least understanding what future practices would be like....

Getting accurate information out of management is harder than getting blood from a stone.

When Arriva took over, part of me thought they would offer a basic year or two year deal then get themselves settled ready to sort out the harmonisation and possible Sunday working in 2018.

Instead they've kept the Abellio deadwood and continued business as normal when it comes to industrial relations.

They've been exceptionally good at lowering the standard in quite a few areas.

Train Drivers currently the 26th out of 350 best paid profession, that's the same as Senior Emergency Services Manager, NHS Directors and Senior Managers, Specialist IT Managers, Manufacturing Directors and Senior Sales Managers....

With the possible exception of ex-TPE staff, Northern drivers are between eight and seventeen percent below that average wage and would better fit around 34 to 53 in that list.

....Guards are 57th same as Police Officers, Chartered Accountants, IT Professionals and Production Engineers....

The actual list says "Rail transport operatives", so I'm not sure exactly who that encompasses, but if I recall correctly the last Northern vacancy list I saw with a Guard on it, they are about £10k-£12k below that average (fully trained), putting them down at 114th to 167th in that table, along with the likes of "Prison service officers", "Probation officers" and "Social workers".

Rail construction workers are 90th around the same as Journalists and Secondary School teachers, Aircraft Maintenance, Telecoms Engineers, Vets and Chartered Architects....

Northern don't have any of them.

.... Non guard rail staff like travel assistants are 97th....

I'd be delighted to receive that sort of wage for my job, alas my basic pay from Northern (for a booking office role with additional platform duties at certain locations) is more than £10k lower than that, around about 238 along with "Postal workers, mail sorters, messengers and couriers", "Officers of non-governmental organisations" and "Credit controllers".

For Train Presentation Operatives you can take off another £5k, around about 290 in that list with "Farm Workers" and "Gardeners and landscape gardeners".

The list is at least a year old.

Well pay negotiations often drag on for many months, so a strike this early seems, shall we put it, less than reasonable?

Pay negotiations have been going on for months, for a pay deal that is already going to be backdated nine months. A pay negotiation where the latest offer is "that or nothing" and is largely no move on the initial offer, but is for a longer period. Where exactly do you expect them to go with more talks?

This is April 2016 pay deal. So even if it was settled this month it'd be 9/10 months late. As already mentioned Arriva waited 6 months before even making the offer. Balloting at this point isn't premature whatever your view of the value of the Arriva offer.

No rail staff are hard done by, downtrodden public sector workers. They've all had inflation-busting (and on RPI, not CPI) increases over many years. The only envy here is that some rail companies (usually the ones making lots of money) pay more than others.

Plenty of rail staff have had no rise for a number of years. For many in the foreseeable future, the only way to getting a pay rise is to move up grades.

Guards and drivers are not the only ones contributing to the operation of the railway network, but are some of the lucky ones with inflation busting rises every year, sometimes with efficiency improvement measures thrown in, and sometimes not.

Just because others have rolled over and accepted pay freezes and reductions why should rail workers do the same? Do we all have to join in the race to the bottom?

I rarely comment here, because others are far more eloquent in their replies than I could ever be. However, that is an utterly ignorant comment. You seriously think people just "roll over"? Has it occurred to you for one moment that the options for many thousands were to have a pay freeze (in one case I know of, for five years) or the business will just die? Because for a lot of employers, that remains the very real possibility.
So instead of looking in disdain at those who just "roll over" you may do well to consider their options are extremely limited, and if you happen to be one of those being balloted for strike action, there are plenty who would love your job without the pay you seem to have such a sense of entitlement to.

Northern staff had double or triple the average in many recent years so other industries are playing catch up with the rail staff who sprinted off in to the distance.

Care to back it up?
Which years did Northern staff receive double and triple the average?

And so it begins, the wage envy.....

Look, if people want to moan about how train crews get "inflation-busting" wage rises, or are paid way more than people in other sectors there is something you can do. Apply to a TOC! Just remember though, you'll be expected to work shifts from as early as 4am to 1am the next morning, maybe even 24/7 depending on which TOC you apply for. Then there is the responsibility, be it for checking / collecting revenue protection, safely dispatching trains, dealing with disputes / drunks / aggressives, driving several hundred people at speeds of up to 125mph, whilst knowing every inch of the route (no Google maps in that job!), being able to remain calm in an emergency situation should one arise, and the myriad of other responsibility rail crews have every single day. If any of these seem daunting (and there are thousands of accounts of the job across these forums) then maybe you'd like to reconsider moaning about their wages? If not, well then why aren't you filling out that application form right now?

And just for the record, I do not work on the railways, I have 3 decades working in the public sector behind me having had below inflation pay rises for almost 10 years now.

You will probably get called, Ignorant, Out of touch, No idea how the real world works Liar. This forum is so full of bitterness its unreal and sadly for me this is my last post in the Railway discussion section and will stick to the other parts that still have decency and dignity attached. I have never seen a forum quite like it and when I first joined it was reasonably well balanced, now sadly its just full of people wishing to bash train crew. This isn't a rail forum anymore just a forum to find anything to have a go at Traincrew and that is so very sad.

I've no doubt that I will, but I stand by what I say. Too often in this country let alone the forum people resort to slagging each other off because of wages, conditions, the colour of their kitchen. It reveals a rather nasty streak that seems to run through our society, fuelled by the gutter tabloid media and a string of "look how awful one part or another society is" fly on the wall documentaries. Suddenly people read a tabloid article, or social media meme and become experts in their field, able to tell you why you shouldn't have this, that or the other (whilst quietly retaining the right to whinge at the slightest thing).

At a time when people are being squeezed ever more, and large corporations and even overseas governments tapping our economy for more and more, you'd think people would come together and support people trying to make a difference. But it seems they'd rather moan and insult. Great Britain eh?

I'm sorry you feel the way you do about this particular sub-forum, but fully understand why.

Interesting combination of roles you suggest there. So you think that a member of TOC staff drives a train, despatches it and carries out revenue protection, as well as dealing with drunks. Gives a new meaning to DOO!

Sorry, my wording probably wasn't as good as it should have been. I was just listing some roles that a member of train crew might undertake, be they guard or driver etc. I'm not advocating DOO, I'm very much against the idea epsecially having read some of the issues that drivers have with it!

Sorry, ill health has meant I have been away from this website for long periods of time since the start of the New Year, so can someone inform me of the date that the union ballot will be held, the number of options on the ballot and how many union members employed by Northern in number will be eligible to cast their vote.

Incidentally, I have heard a rumour that STM Security will soon be replaced once again by G4S on the Northern franchise. Is there any truth to this?

And, despite me asking yesterday, still nobody appears to be able to explain what this 'benchmark' the union spoke of actually is... :(

I suspect the RMT press release, as always, is very badly worded and completely misses the point.

I understand the simple matter of disagreement is that none of the Unions want a 3 or 4 year deal, but Northern will not offer anything except a 3 or 4 year deal, and say you get this or nothing, and that's it.

If I was in their shoes with what is going on in that franchise and the economy generally I certainly wouldn't want to lock myself into a 3 or 4 year deal now.

The pay award for April 2014 was 2.7% or £450 if £450 is greater: https://www.rmt.org.uk/news/rates-of-pay-and-conditions-of-service-2014--northern-rail151014/

Your link shows the average increase in wages for all sectors in April 2014 was 0.9%

0.9 X 3 = 2.7.

There are lots of other safety critical jobs with unsociable working hours which don't pay anywhere near as much as train crews. While I do think there should be government subsides for the railways it doesn't seem fair those subsides to be used towards giving train crews above inflation pay increases when they have excellent pay and conditions compared to many other critical safety staff e.g. on call fire fighters or paramedics.

The RMT president (which is a largely ceremonial role) said they wanted to push the elected government into collapsing, resulting in elections. That's exactly what happened in 1979. It's got nothing to do with "overthrowing the democratically elected government of the of the UK" unless you think Thatcher was some kind of fascist guerilla.

Happy to accept the revised wording as to how RMT wishes to bring down a democratically elected government.

It still does not sit well with your stated role of RMT as outlined in your post #40

Just because some ceremonial fud says something in a personal capacity ages ago and you latch onto it, it doesn't mean it represents the primary purpose of the organization.

Your hyperbole in describing normal democratic and civic actions as "bringing down a democratically elected government" suggests you are either rather reactionary or a troll, so either way I doubt you'll accept this.

What you need to remember is when a trade union goes in and asks for a pay rise (how dare they) it's blatant that they are trying to bring down a Tory government, can't have a pay rise as one forum member on here "hasn't had one in years" or it's because Jeremy Corbyn told them to ballot for action.

Plenty of rail staff have had no rise for a number of years.

No pay rise? Name me any such group.

Comparisons are odious; no two jobs are identical. One of the downsides of collective bargaining is simply that those with more power have a better chance of getting more pay. If you have a weak bargaining position then it doesn't do much for you. Mind you none of these groups are near the minimum wage; there are millions worse off.

You can't honestly tell me that some trade unions don't wear their extreme left-wing views on their sleeve with pride. Just look at my signature. Just listen to the RMT president. They invite these sorts of criticisms onto themselves and distract from their key purpose.

I thought my post had a hint of been tongue in cheek ;)

Without wishing to drag the topic into political thoughts as per other threads on this board, I'm fully aware that certain trade unionists are vocal left wing activists and they certainly haven't kept their opinions quiet. IMHO the tide has slowly been turning against the political belief and aims of trade unions, members are getting tired of hearing about politics rather than key issues for them in the workplace. Len McCluskey is having a battle against a candidate who is sick of Unite banging on about the government and the Labour party. The link between some major trade unions and the labour movement will still be there but I think it should be looser. The only time I think trade unions should be involved is when there are government policies or attacks that require the unions attention on their industry or labour affiliated unions have yet another leadership.

This Northern dispute is an industrial dispute over a pay deal that should have been sorted last year under the previous franchisee. Arriva would have known this is overdue so shouldn't come as a shock to anyone.

Agreed but the RMT wants to compare Northern with other TOCs where roles are not identical. For instance, Virgin ticket office/travel centre staff at Manchester Piccadilly or Stockport do not do the same role as Northern ticket office staff at Hale or East Didsbury.

So once rather than "many recent years"

I was only able to find exact details of the 3 most recent pay offers and one of those is the current one they are voting on so may not be the final amount.

Anyway you were originally saying about the offer for the Northern staff being 0.3% below the average for this year, so getting 1.8% above the average in one previous year is really sufficient to back up my claim of 'other industries are playing catch up with the rail staff who sprinted off in to the distance.'
