Doing a tangent from Philthetube's thread.

Northern in conjunction with Johnston Press do the offer now and again for the 3 vouchers and you can get this ticket for £10. http://www.brfares.com/#roverdetail?nlc=I183&rvr=NOR

There isn't any mention of this ranger being available on National Rail or Northern Trains websites, so could I ask for this ticket from the conductor / ticket office?

According to the T&C:
1: They have to be bought at a staffed station in the Northern area, and cannot be bought on trains
2: Yoy have to supply the online form, printed, with three coupons attached

I've only done this once when the scheme was quite new, but had to go to a Northern station (Sunderland) after two at the time East Coast stations couldn't sell them. As this promotion has now been running on and off for a few years it may be that ticket offices are now better briefed?

Yes- I've had Newcastle and Sheffield issue these in the past two years no issue at all. Newcastle a bit confused at first but issued fine eventually- Sheffield surprisingly did it absolutely no questions asked.

Likewise, I've bought one at Sheffield several times without any problem - it's an East Midlands Trains station, but well served by Northern.

But I would expect that if you try to buy one at a station that is served by Northern, but not in an area where any of the participating Johnston Press newspapers are sold, and/or where Northern only accounts for a fairly small percentage of trains that call there (such as Nottingham, where the only Northern trains are on the hourly Nottingham-Leeds service, and according to the Northern website there are no participating local papers in Nottingham apart from the Ilkeston Advertiser), staff might be less likely to be familiar with this offer.

I’ve never had any problems getting one at Alfreton. It’s an EMT station, but they have always sold it to me without any problems finding it and they know exactly what it is.
I’ve always found the staff at Alfreton very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I’ve easily purchased a 7 Day NW Rover, and other out of area rovers, and have often brought tickets to destinations in the north, splitting at Sheffield, with no problems.

I thought I might have a problem buying one of these tickets at Carlisle. It's a Virgin station, and the nearest newspaper that prints the tokens is published 60 miles away in Newcastle.
No problem at all though. They were aware of the offer and had a printout with the instructions. I've also bought them from Preston and Crewe with no problem.
