Consultation is open (again) for the Northern Line Extension to Battersea.

Excerpt from a TfL email -

TfL said:
These include:
  • Extending the line from Kennington to Battersea via Nine Elms
New stations at Battersea and Nine Elms
  • Two permanent shafts at Kennington Green and Kennington Park to provide ventilation, cooling and emergency access if required
  • Two temporary shafts at Radcot Street and Harmsworth Street to enable works to stabilise the ground in preparation for the new tunnels to be built
The consultation period will closes at 17:00 on Sunday 16 December 2012.

What about Copthall - Edgware - Bushey Heath ?

Doubt that's ever going to happen. This is being built (in part?) thanks to developer contribution, and because it should be regenerating the Battersea part of South or Saaarrrfff London.

Shame there's no plan for an extention to Clapham Junc though. That really would make it an Interchange station, as well as an easier way to get to Gatwick from the north.

If enough people raise that in the consultation, especially if it is in the form of complaining at not having the interchange opportunity available..........

Being built entirely with private financing, part developer cash and part levy on the new businesses. The VNEB area is exempt from the Crossrail levy mostly as it will find the NLE.

It will be built pointing towards Clapham Junction, the main reason(s) it isn't going there at first are a) the developer won't pay for it as it doesn't have to, and b) there is no way the Northern Line could cope with the huge numbers of people that would interchange there as it currently stands. It would also require a major rebuild of Clapham Junction as passenger flows would considerably alter.

The plans DO appear to leave the end of the tunnels at battersea suitable for future extensions.

I'm afraid I can't remember where I read it, but I do recall reading that it would be virtually impossible to open an Underground station at Clapham Junction unless there were at least two lines opened simultaneously as otherwise noone would get on North of Clapham Junction during the morning peak on whichever line it was that was built.

Well.... you could always build a huge curved tunnel round from Brixton to Clapham Junction on the Victoria Line......!!

Isn't that Crossrail 2? (Currently mapped to take over Parsons Green - Wimbledon)

Wouldnt anyone from 'The North' Just be better getting off at Kings Cross/ST Pancras or even London bridge and getting a train from there rather than going even further south on a slower service only to change at Clapham?

Once Thameslink "2000" is in full swing, maybe even change at Peterborough or Luton/Bedford would cover a lot of the north and the rest at St Pancras Thameslink.

For people using rail yes. Overall the idea of making Clapham an interchange for Gatwick for people from the North really doesnt make sense

Bit of a waste that the extenstion won't run through to Clapham Junction immediately, but that would require a major rebuild of the station. This will have to be done sometime with projects including the need to improve interchange and fit AC OHLE in the future.

As said above, having a single tube line at Clapham would be an over crowding disaster in the making

The Battersea branch will only be connected to the Charing Cross branch though- City commuters would then have the choice of a second change at Kennington onto the Bank Branch (from Morden)- or of course a change further up to the Circle/District or Central lines (unlikely)

Ideally connected to this would be a project to sort out Camden out to facilitate better same-direction interchanges, with full separation of services seeing a Northern Line West and a Northern Line East, allowing better service frequencies and reliability

Isn't the plan to gradually segregate the two branches of the Northern Line by the end of the decade? Might we see a new underground line (name)?

Barnet to Battersea: Northern line

Edgware to Morden: City and Southern line (after the company who built most of it, the first tube railway and the first electric railway in the world).

Reusing names of old railway companies when splitting lines has precedent: Hammersmith and City line anyone?

Yep but that'll require a better interchange and rebuild at Camden Town

Northern - Edgware to Battersea
City - High Barnet / Mill Hill East to Morden
They both have a depot (Golders Green on Northern and Morden on City)

Keep one black and the other has always been out as a lighter district line green (but darker than Tramlink lime)

This colour is quite distinctive, or how about this one?

Light Green is taken by Tramlink (i know its not on the underground map, but still...) and the first one looks a little too similar to the Metropolitan.

Probably only leaves Mauve or Lilac

There are already two blues, so two shades of another colour aught not to be a problem

It won't be that way round; that would involve everything crossing tracks at Camden Town junction.

The tube map is deceptive; the City branch actually crosses under the ChX branch at right angles at Euston, passes to the west of Mornington Crescent, and then swings round to approach the ChX branch from the west at Camden Town.

The colour I picked was mauve? Metropolitan Magenta is much redder. (Your monitor may vary :P)

I know but then we wouldn't have the issues with the depots and also in the Camden Town redevelopment isn't remodelling the junction included?

(cannot believe I thought Mauve is like a creamy brown )

Whoops! I actually meant to say Peach or Beige. Or something equally difficult to see on white ;)
