Please remember it is often only at the third stage appeal people are successful so be prepared to appeal a second and third time.

I've seen 2 penalty fares issued onboard on the Airedale line over the past week and been checked by RPIs far more often than ever before.

And don't forget to check the basics such as signage and include them in the appeal. A large number of stations have inadequate signage and allow a plausible argument to be presented that they don't comply. (It's often worth adding this to any appeal.)

Display of Notices
8.—(1) The requirements for the display of notices are as follows.
(2) Where any entrance onto a platform at the station is not the entrance to, or situated within, a compulsory ticket area, a notice complying with the requirements of paragraph 1 of Part 1 of Schedule 1 (“a standard notice”) must be displayed at that entrance.

(4) Standard notices and compulsory ticket area notices must also be displayed at sufficient locations around the station so that at least one notice is readily visible to passengers prior to boarding a train at the station, including passengers changing from one train to another train.

Many stations fail (4) as they prioritise paid advertising.
Note that compliance here is a matter of fact for the station concerned at the time you travelled, but is otherwise independent of your particular journey and route through the station.
