Northern Evening Peak Leeds - Horsforth

There is an evening peak Northern service I sometimes see from Leeds - Horsforth. However there does not seem to be in the timetable a return journey from Horsforth back to Leeds. Therefore does this unit return light to Leeds or does it go further north to Harrogate or Knaresborough to start another service?

My guess it goes ECS back to Leeds to work 1743 Leeds-Knaresborough. But I would have to see it to confirm that.

Righto, in that case, why do they not have a corresponding Horsforth - Leeds service? Would this mess the timings about meaning the unit would be late back at Leeds?

Because its probably
-The only path they can get into Leeds
-If it was delayed into Leeds it would have trouble getting a path out

It's going to have to stop and meet rules of the route regulations for a passenger service. Leeds throat is not exactly quiet.

That's two things I have learned about the Harrogate to Leeds timetable in four days! If you had asked me I would have told you that there are two morning and two evening peak services between Leeds and Horsforth because that always used to be the case and I have used that line on and off since the early 70s. Having looked at the timetable that is no longer the case and there is just the one in the evening in the one direction. Perhaps the opening of Burley Park and the 11-minute allowance to get to Leeds City put paid to return workings not carrying passengers.

In the morning there is, of course, the 'fast' early morning service from Knaresborough and Harrogate which is non-stop to Horsforth. Did this replace one of the early morning Horsforth to Leeds services?

I remember back in the 70s, one or two trains on the York-Harrogate-Leeds route actually originated beyond the line. The one that came through Harrogate at around 18:20 bound for Leeds was always formed of a Derby 50xxx/56xxx two-car unit and had run from elsewhere - South Yorkshire perhaps. These trains were never advertised as such but you always knew when one was coming at York because they used a through platform, sometimes Platform 9 as was. Because it wasn't advertised as a through service, occasionally passengers would get off when it arrived at York only to have to get back on again because they were travelling to somewhere on the Harrogate line. I'll shut up. I'm starting to ramble.

Did the service today. ECS back to Leeds to work 1743 Leeds-Knaresborough. My guess its ECS because 1611 York-Leeds via H'gate calls at Horsforth 1705. The ECS runs just infront of that service.

Yes, 0822 Horsforth-Leeds now starts back at Knaresborough at 0756. This started in sept 03 and was Class 37 hauled for the 1st year. As a result the 1743 Leeds-Horsforth now goes through to Knaresborough.

I did the 1643 Leeds-Horsforth tonight and it was well used.
