Hello everyone

Any Northern conductors out there able to answer a question or two?

1 Do employees get free travel on all services operated by parent company arriva? Or is it just Northern and gc.

2 What are the holiday/annual leave entitlements and how are they allocated? Choose your own or auto allocation?

The company seems to be a very reasonable and attractive place to work. The actual northern staff seem very helpful and in good spirit.

1. I travel about on my days off quite a bit, I am sure someone else will be able to add to this list but upto now I have had free travel on...

Northern
Arriva Trains Wales
Grand Central to London Kings Cross
Cross Country Services

Think there is quite a few more we get agreed free travel on, I have also approached Conductors on East Midlands and TPE services and asked if I could get on and have never been refused although I try my best to use our own services where possible.


2. Annual leave is all Rostered, E.G at Sheffield when I was a Conductor the holidays where on a rotating cycle which was either 10 or 12 blocks Can't remember exactly which change annually.

E.G...

1 Week early Winter leave which is between Jan 1st and March 31st.

3 Weeks Summer leave as a block between April 1st and Sep 30th

1 Week late Winter leave between Oct 1st and Dec 31st

Also 5 Floating days to take when you want.

You might be in block 3 One Year, The next block 8 and so on. Depending on what block you are in depends what week in your 1st week, 3 weeks and last weeks leave you get.

So to answer your question the holidays are pre decided for you.

25 days pre rostered plus 5 floating days. 30 in total.

No problems at all

2) holidays depend on grade, most are on a pre rostered pattern but retail grades get 4 weeks and 4 floating days as opposed to conductors 5 and 5

3) Sunday rates and overtime rates vary by grade and location.

If you ask about a specific job for a specific location people can give you more of an idea

The free travel agreements apply to all services on:

1) Arriva Trains Wales
2) Chiltern Railway
3) Merseyrail (even though they're not an Arriva TOC, there is still a reciprocal agreement in place)
4) Tyne and Wear Metro

They also get free travel on Cross Country and Grand Central but there are a couple of restrictions on travelling on very busy services with these operators.

Northern employees have been specifically told LOROL travel IS NOT included. The documents on the Northern Staff Intranet confirm the same.

I'm presuming they come under east drivers so they will get 5 weeks rostered leave and 8 floating days as standard. Same arrangement for pre rostered leave as above, 1 winter/spring week 3 summer, 1 Autumn/winter. Work every day except Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Maybe getting New Year's Day off if your lucky. The rest are all flat rate no matter what days your working. Salary should be just short of £47,000

I expect that will change in November when Arriva take over the Overground fully.
