Northern electric units.

Paid a trip to Manchester today and noticed some shiny electric units on the station in northern colours. Are these ready for North west electrification or already in use ?

They will be the 323s which have been plying their trade in the Manchester area for around 20 years.

Manchester Piccadilly sees 142,150,156 and 323 from the Northern fleet. Usually at least one of each when I pass through.

They have just had a fairly major overhaul so that may be why they look shiny. Units for NW not going to be around for at least another year.

The 323s are the star of Northern's fleet in the North West at least, quite a large capacity and many people find it hard to believe they are 20 years old. Although the 156s with birch table tops look really good.

Just like EMT with the 158s that feel like a modern train and again not 20+ years old!

323s are good units, Northern really could do with updating the 321/322s on the Leeds - Doncaster line to the same spec.
