Not sure it needs news headlines. But I suppose they didn't know what to use the rest of the screen for.

If news headlines are good enough for Manchester Piccadilly, they are good enough for St Bees ;)

I have seen that type of screen on a small station elsewhere (but can't remember where) and they are much better than the ones in post #54 as they display all the stops, and more trains, without scrolling.

At stations with more services there could be less space left for non-train running information. Also these types of screen could have paid advertising under the train information and could then finish up being more cost effective in the long term than smaller LED displays.

If it's like the screens at many bus stops, they started with news, weather, even limited web access, but in the end all that pretty much dies. In my experience, people don't look at any of it.

Delamere and Lostock Gralam are also getting CIS (funded by Cheshire West council.)
This Northern Rail press release of 11 Jan said that it is Lostock Gralam and Cuddington CIS that has been funded by Cheshire West and Chester council, implying that Delamere has been funded from the Northern Direct Award scheme. If correct, this seems odd, since Cuddington has greater footfall than Delamere.

Users of Lostock Gralam will have cause to be thankful that the station lies just within the Cheshire West and Chester local authority boundary. I doubt that Cheshire East council would have been willing to provide the funding. Although, to be fair, Plumley, Mobberley and Ashley (in Cheshire East) all have lower footfall than Mouldsworth in Cheshire West and Chester, which will be the other Mid-Cheshire line station left CIS-less.

When Northern did a presentation to Merseytravel following the Direct Award being made the Mid-Cheshire stations listed were Cuddington, Greenbank, Northwich, Knutsford and Navigation Road and the general pattern for all stations seemed to be 50,000 or more journeys per annum were required for CIS. Hale was excluded because TfGM had agreed to fund that already. So either Northern have made an error in the press release or the CIS intended for Cuddington was transferred to Delamere due to local council funding.

These smaller PIS displays have appeared recently at Alderley Edge, Holmes Chapel and Sandbach, but I don't think at Goostrey or Chelford - would they be funded by Northern or Cheshire East? Even platform 3 at Sandbach has got one, for it's one scheduled train per day!

Interestingly Infotec has posted an article about these smaller screens. Most of the stations mentioned in the article actually have the standard 3 line 'medium format 3 line next train indicator' as Infotec calls them. Though I think this is because they were funded the PTEs and not Northern itself.

Interesting they say the 2 line ones are for small stations, yet Northern have fitted them at some category D "medium staffed" stations.

The TfGMC Rail Infrastructure Update, dated 24 Feb 2016, includes the following:
2.3 Northern Rail, as part of their franchise extension commitments, has
delivered Customer Information Screens at 100 stations across their
franchise area (consisting of 462 stations), including Appley Bridge,
Ashburys, Bredbury, Dinting, Disley, Godley, Gorton, Hattersley, Ince,
Moston, Navigation Road, Strines and Woodsmoor.

2.4 Growth Deal Two funding has been allocated for the provision of further
safety, security and information systems at rail stations across Greater
Manchester over the next two years. Thirty eight stations have been selected
and prioritised using footfall. Larger stations which are currently staffed and
are only missing help points remain excluded from the programme, as they
were previously. In addition, Ardwick, Clifton, Denton and Reddish South
stations have been excluded due to their footfall being under 1,000
passengers per year.

2.5 Designs for passenger help points, CCTV, real time information screens and
public announcement systems are now underway at the following 38 rail
stations: Hall I' th' Wood, Ashburys, Hattersley, Ince, Strines, Glossop,
Atherton, Hadfield, Bromley Cross, Lostock Parkway, Appley Bridge, Irlam,
Bredbury, Flowery Field, Woodsmoor, Bryn, Moston, Dinting, Gorton,
Navigation Road, Godley, Hyde Central, Hag Fold, Glazebrook, Hyde North,
Farnworth, Patricroft, Woodley, Trafford Park, Moorside, Kearsley, Chassen
Road, Ryder Brow, Middlewood, Moses Gate, Humphrey Park, Fairfield and
Belle Vue [listed in priority order based on footfall].

2.6 Based on costs from previous [Rail Station Improvement Strategy] tranches it is intended that of the 38
stations a minimum of 24 stations can be delivered. The remaining 14 would
be “shovel ready” to exploit any future funding opportunities or should
savings be found during the design process.
