Northern Contracts/references

Does anyone know if Northern request employment references and then issue contracts etc when they recieve them?
If not how long does it take them after a medical to issue the contract/formal offer?

Had my medical last Wednesday, not had confirmation about the d&a yet but that shouldn't be a problem. I'll need to hand may notice in the next week or so to be able to attend the course date.
My current employer will not exactly be quick at returning a reference and without a contract I'd be reluctant to hand my notice in just in case something goes wrong.

You'll get contracts after the medical if successful. When you receive the contracts and are asked to fill things out, you're then asked for references and a character reference too.
