Northern Conductor

Hello.

I think I’m about to become a trainee conductor with Northern (assuming I don’t have any unknown conditions that crop up in next week’s medical) and have a few questions I probably should have already found out about by now:

1. The salary is £27,189 after training - does this mean as soon as you’ve passed your training your salary goes up to this amount, or does it get to this level in increments?

2. Is Sunday overtime paid at time and a half? And any other overtime at basic rate?

3. How many days annual leave do you get and does this rise based on length of service?

4. What’s the pension like and how much do you contribute?

Think that’s all. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

As soon as you pass your final rules you go up to full salary, no increments.

3% commission on ticket sales.

All Overtime is 115% except Sundays which is 125% (I assume you are east region with wage).

Annual leave is 31 days, five rostered weeks and 6 floating days, you have rest days in the links too.

Pension is well worth joining, unsure of contribution though, around £100 mark per month.

Everything will be explained in the training school, don't worry and good look.

Potato185, how much overtime are you generally doing to take home £2k?

Also do you know when I’ll be given my rota and how much flexibility there is? Just concerned about not having enough time to sort out childcare.

Skipton is a satellite depot to Leeds so comes under East.

I usually manage 1 or 2 rest days a month, plus take about £100-200 commission a too (early shifts are better for it).

Training school lasts 3 months, and then depending on what the roster structure is, you'll either be spare until a link vacancy or go straight in. Piccadilly is a big depot so newbies go into what's called a surplus link. That being permanent spare shifts to cover any loose ends.

Flexibility can come and go. Best speak to Skipton crew regarding this.

Just left Skipton for Blackburn, you'll like it there, lovely staff.

Don't worry too much about child care, concentrate on passing the course first, there are plenty of staff with children at Skipton and they always work with each other to make it easier, shift swaps etc etc.

Hi all, as long as I pass my medical then I too shall be joining northern as a conductor in jan/Feb. I will be based at Piccadilly so I was wondering what the shift patterns are like? I've been told at Victoria they do 4 days at a time and have 5 days off every 3 weeks. Is Piccadilly the same, and how far in advance do you find out what your rota is?

Look forward to seeing you about Ellie. Us Piccadilly guards have a weird roster. It's not a set rest day pattern like most other rail depots have, but still features long weekends and such. As a result, we get slightly more AL than others as a result, so it's rough with smooth. Our shifts vary from 0407 earliest to 0215 finishes. Luckily those shifts start and end with taxis or empties to and from somewhere.

I'll PM you with the latest roster we have as well as some diagrams to have a nosey at. Links 1 2 and 3 sign Buxton but no class 319s whilst 3 4 and 5 sign Liverpool. The new links come in mid May and will accommodate 160 guards.

Hi, I have got my medical on the 7th Jan and will start the training in May (subject to medical) and then will be working out of Liverpool Lime Street. Does anyone on here have any recent conductor rosters they could share so I could see what a typical week looks like?

hi, I have been successful and landed conductors job at Manchester Piccadilly. What are the shifts like there? Is it a friendly depot? Sorry to bother you but I have read your posts which are very helpful.
