Northern Class 331 East:West unit swap

Looking at Real Time Trains this morning I see that 331009 is working Airedale services and 331110 is on its way to Blackpool.

Have any more crossed the Pennines yet?

Can I ask why they are swapping the 3 and 4 car around?

Often when I travel Doncaster - Leeds the 4 car 331 is often very busy, making it a 3 car will make it cosy.

Northern 319s are being withdrawn, and will all be gone by December 23 timetable change.

Short term, there's going to be services that will likely be 3-car only.

Long term, the West Yorkshire services (some) will eventually become 6-cars, once the WMT 323s come up to the North West so more 331/0s go to West Yorkshire.

That is what's currently moving. There will be further moves when more 323s move to Northern from WMT and platform lengthening is finished on the East.

This morning I was on 2H21 0744 Skipton to Leeds with 331002.

Plenty of folk having to stand from Shipley as a result of 3 cars provided in place of the usual 4.

What was that promise about not using them on peak Airedale services to and from Leeds?

That's the third time to my knowledge 331002 has worked that service in the last week. I'm really hoping it's an interim position until the diagrams change in A couple of weeks.

At least once it's swapped onto a Doncaster on arrival at Leeds.

Was on board 331006 today on the delayed 13:17 to leeds but got off at shipley to catch 331002 on the 13:53 to Menston has i went to shipley to see 37601 drag 331004 to the station on 333011 which took me to leeds from menston on the 11:21 to leeds and stayed on it to skipton has the 11:32 to bradford forster Square was cancelled and was allowed to travel on the train.

Apologies, I'm.sure its been brought up before and other than money, i'm sure there'll be a good enough explanation for it... but is there no possibility of ordering more carriages and making more of the 3-car sets a 4-car set?

I appreciate that these swaps are making do for what they have to work with right now. But in the mid-term surely it can't be acceptable to also disadvantage the East side of the Pennines on their continually growing passenger numbers.

Also, internally it has been said that there will be no more vehicles ordered for the 195/331 fleet. Any new vehicles will now be in this framework order that's coming, which may or not be CAF

Leeds to Wakefield and Doncaster does have LNER though, Skipton and Ilkley do not. Doncaster trains only see mainly local traffic to Fitzwilliam and the others.

Not until the triangle commences 6 car working to release 333’s. Training for Donny crews should start in advance of this.

This of course is due to the delay in platform lengthening on the Airedale/Wharfedale lines. It should all be in place now but circumstances have delayed the work.
