I haven’t found a thread that fully covers this, apologises if there is one.

How many class 170s are now in service with Northern, and on what services are they operating?

See this thread...

Services they currently run are (AFAIK) Harrogate line, Leeds-Selby, and (I think now) Leeds to Nottingham. Plus one per day hired to TPE for the Leeds to Huddersfield stopper. Numbers will be on that thread or the Northern Unit Refurbishments one.

The 170's only operate on the Leeds-Harrogate-York line
Leeds-Selby line
Leeds-Huddersfield
They don't operate on the Nottingham's yet and crew training is currently taking place for the Hull-Sheffield services instead of them running on the Leeds-Elland-Southport services.

They won't be running on the Leeds-Southports, that has been confirmed, they will be staying east of the Pennines for the foreseeable.

I take it they won't be working the proposed Chester-Leeds services then? What's working those?

As far as I'm aware/have read before, 158s (though, knowing northern, whatever the unit generator chucks out) then 195s

Yes 158s on the Chester-Leeds. Eventually 195s but that will be a while.

Is it known what is likely to be running those services instead? Being my local route I was hoping for something a bit better than class 150s which seem to be the mainstay now.

Last I heard 158s were mentioned, but that would need Wigan crew to be trained on 158s unless the work is divided up very precisely. Only Victoria and Wigan crew work Wigan-Southport.

On Leeds-Southport you’d expect it to be 158s to take advantage of higher line speeds now on the Calder Valley, unless they plan to use 195s but I can’t see that. But we are getting very off topic now. All we know is 170s won’t be on the route.

Today’s Railway UK March edition is reporting the 170’s to be used on Sheffield to Hull / Bridlington. There’s certainly been a fair few training runs between Doncaster & York lately too.

Some other discussions have also mentioned the 769s operating to Southport which, although similar to 150s, will at least add a bit of interest to the line.
