As far as I'm aware, 158815/16/872. Might be more but I had 872 last night about 3 times so that's a certainty!

All I noticed is a new carpet and a few seats now have all purple covers without the vertical white lines. Not much of a refurbishment to be honest, a few still have Central Trains stickers inside! Honestly, Northern should give their 158's a major overhaul with a brighter interior, better lighting and an overall clean, fresh look, not a half ar*ed attempt with just new seat covers and grey carpets. South West Trains 158/159's and other 158's with ATW, FGW and EMT are good examples of what can be done to an Express Sprinter and Northern should do the same.

On the Yorkshire Coast Line (Hull - Bridlington - Scarborough) I've heard people complain about how grubby the 158's are. When I lived in Kent Southeastern did a fantastic job of keeping the now 20yr old Networker fleet in top condition and it is a shame it's not the same story here.

Have they seriously replaced just random seat covers through the unit?! That is very poor indeed!

The rest had all been replaced in the last 5 years.

That sounds like the half-baked approach one would expect from Northern based on most people's recorded experiences :| It's shocking how bad most of their units apparently are, they must surely have the grottiest fleet in the country? My own experiences would tend to back that up.

They have an odd mixed fleet, on the top of the scale are the class 333's which are probably the newest multiple units in the fleet, on the other side are the class 142 Pacers which are the worst I've ever seen. I got a few photo's of their bog standard Pacer unit and grotty doesn't even cut it.

The 158's are basically the flagship for long distance services, many do the full leg of the Sheffield - Bridlington (2hrs 20 mins) and some to Scarborough (nearly 3 hours) and a proper refurbishment would be suitable. It gives the TOC a bad name if they run trains in such a sorry state! A repaint just covers it up giving the public a false impression that Northern run clean, reliable trains. The 158/8's aren't the best with many being sluggish and sound like a cat being run down by a lawnmower and even with the newer seats they still could do with better.
