Noticed in a Northern class 153 yesterday a notice announcing that all their 24 class 153's will be refurbished during the next 13 months (due for completion late 2014)

They also have 7 x 155s which could be included as part of the same refurbishment but that would make 25 trains not 24 trains.

Must be an unfortunate miscount as i am sure i have seen the posters up in the 155s too. They regularly appear on my Harrogate line services into Leeds will check it out next time im on one.

Same picture is on some of the 142s, although at a quick glance the picture looks like a 156.

Perhaps some of them are so badly in need, they have to be done twice. They could certainly do with some more horsepower, or something to improve their lethargic performance.

I'd have thought the 150s are more in need of a 'refresh' than the 153/155s... Even the 142s, come to mention it!

The ex-ATN 142s are getting a refresh.

I think Northern probably class the ex-LM 150s as 'done' even though they've only had an external repaint and new purple seat covers, which clash badly with the worn vinyl on the floor. Maybe they'll do like with the ex-FNW 156s and come back and do an internal repaint and new floor covering in a couple of years time?

The ex FNW 153s are awful and are in desperate need of some TLC. The 155s internally seem fine and certainly nothing a deep clean won't solve. I'm assuming they'll receive an external repaint as the angular livery does look rather dated (and grubby) now

I wonder whether the ex-ATN 142's refresh may consist of putting a Dot-Matrix display in the front of each unit to match the ex-Merseyrail ones?

I think it's very unlikely. The external Merseyrail displays are harder to see in the dark than the traditional blinds while the internal ones only show the destination and and probably are no longer in production given accessibility requirements for PIS.

Northern have retro fitted their 323s with blinds instead of digital destination displays.

Yes, some 153s have become very careworn inside, I think some even have ex-FNW interiors from the days they strengthened 156s on Cumbria - Manchester Airports! :lol:Theres been so many feet on the carpets there isn't much of a carpet left!

Yes the 155s do seem to have been more looked after, mind alot still see diagrams on core routes like Manchester - Leeds via Halifax, 153s seem to be relegated to secondary duties/routes or strengthening existing services.

MYSTERY SOLVED

Northern are refurbishing their 24 x ex-ATN 156s. They have put up posters in units that aren't 156s detailing this but they do talk about units being based at Allerton and Heaton being refurbished and the photo on the poster does show a 156 not a 153.

Saw one in a 150 today, bit misleading!

So did I! Although, it was a 150 which was on a 156 diagram, so the usual users of the services it was operating will see a benefit.

I think it's likely they printed a load of posters and are just sticking them up on any Sprinter.

Probably replacing one of the safety adverts that were on a while back. Same as when 142/144s etc go out of the West Yorkshire area but have the Metro adverts on.

Do any 142s have Metro adverts or branding? I know the 144s do, though since the repaint they also have SYPTE branding as do (at least some of) the 153s.

I've not seen any and since they operate more outside the Metro area then within the Metro area I'd be surprised if they did. Some 142s did use to have references to Metro when Arriva Trains Northern operated the service. The announcements for local services at West Yorkshire stations also referred to 'The MetroTrain service to...' opposed to 'The Arriva Trains Northern service to...' but that stopped when Northern Rail took over.

MetroTrain was the 'plug' for rail services in the West Yorkshire area for many years, but it is no longer emphasised. Some stations still have signage with MetroTrain on them, but most just now have Metro and the 'M' logo.
