Northern class 153 livery question

Because it's a single-car unit, so whichever way around the "swooshes" go, they'll be "wrong" when a coupled to another unit at that end...?

Surely it doesn't matter which way the swooshes face? It's a bi-directional unit, so the swooshes are always going to be facing the wrong way when travelling in one direction, there's nothing that can be done about that.

In the photos the OP shares, the swoosh works, as it's attached to a 158 (with a swoosh in the other direction). Does make you wonder why Northern don't couple their 153s small cab to small cab (from what I've seen) it does look a bit odd, swooshes or otherwise

How often are 153s run together? It seems to me to be a pretty rare occurrence for Northern, they are normally used as force multipliers with a two or three car unit.

They tend to couple them by whichever end is nearest the unit being coupled to, for obvious reasons...

I think the reason the swooshes were put at that end is because there's the blank panels (rather than windows) where the toilet is, so the swoosh isn't "lost".

I'm sure that passengers would rather have their train cancelled than see it roll in with a pair of 153s with mis-aligned swooshes.

I would suspect they get coupled whichever way around they happen to be when they need to be coupled.

Are you suggesting that departures should be delayed or cancelled while units are run around remote triangles to ensure that they are coupled up small cab to small cab?
