On loan to ATW for the day - with the Northern strike they weren't needed there and I believe ATW have a shortage of units at the moment

Hire out a refurbished unit and leave your own passengers on pacers with seats falling apart (as seen in a facebook group) whilst your guards are on strike.

Northern in a nutshell!

I'm guessing they couldn't have offered ATW a Pacer for this turn on the grounds the drivers probably aren't cleared to drive them?

So Northern, looking to minimise their losses from the strike action obtained some revenue from ATW - and left their other rosters unchanged.

It might also be the depot the Pacer was being operated from was different to the one the 150 loaned to ATW came from ? I'm guessing the 150 came from Allerton or Newton Heath?

ATW drivers up north cannot drive Pacers. I imagine the set was stabled at Chester but unable to work on the Mid-Cheshire Line due to strike cancellations

Also, I could be completely wrong here, but I seem to recall years ago when Pacers did frequent the North Wales coast on occasion that due to the tight bends on the Conwy valley, pacers couldn't be used due to very loud squealing when going round the tight corners. So a pacer wouldn't have been any use for up the valley.

Deafening the crews and passengers doesn't seem to prevent Pacers being used on routes with tight corners. The reason they got banned from the Cornish branches is the amount of wear that going round the tight corners put on them. BR and modern day TOCs are more bothered about maintenance costs than passenger comfort.

On one occasion a Merseytravel 142 ran a Manchester Airport to Holyhead service under First North Western.

A picture I found of a pacer at Bodorgan was used as a "guess the station " picture just a few weeks ago .

Pacers were rare up here. Not unheard of

Pacers were pretty common for a time back in the midish 80's. I've quoted this before, but I recall 142's being coupled to brand new 150/2's doing the trip from Hull to Holyhead. Quite the rollercoaster!
