I applied for the trainee driver vacancy in leeds on 9th December. Got an email on the 9th january to say thanks for my patience while they sift the vast number of applications.

Got another email today which has confused me slightly.

Due to the volume of applications received, we are carrying out the sift and interviews in staggered stages. Your application is currently at the sift stage and further updates will be issued as soon as we have completed this stage – there is no timeframe for this.



Should you wish to withdraw your application we kindly request that you do so, however, should you wish for your application to remain a consideration for future trainee Driver positions at Leeds, then no further action is required.

So are they still sifting for current vacancies?

Or have I been put on hold to be sifted for next vacancy as they have enough good applicants for now?

Sounds like a talent pool type situation at the sift stage...I imagine they have advanced so many and if any don't cut the mustard they will progress more

I was told at interview last week that they are taking people on every two months until about October. They interview in blocks and the successful put I to a talent pool.

So maybe you could be in the next interview block for August & October intakes?

I had same e-mail yesterday I too applied for trainee driver position way back on 10th December. like every one is saying think its just wait for next available recruitment post. Hopefully not too long

Daz9284 do they interview first before assessments at northern, or is it part assessments then interview, then further assessments final interview?

The driver manager interview is done first, to reduce the numbers sent for psychometrics.

I'm in a slightly different position as I passed the initial interview with Northern in December 2013, and also sat assessments which I passed except the MMI. So I was hoping to skip those stages this time and just have another crack at the MMI, but I'm not sure if that's how it works.

I know it works like that for the assessments, but not sure about the DM interview

What sort of questions do they generally ask is it regarding suitability for role, experience in customer focused roles, when have you had to make an important decision etc? Also do they interview on same day as assessments?

Which interview do you mean? MMI or DM?

With a FOC I applied for: I had the first set of tests on one day, then a month later I had the second set of tests in the morning and passed, so had tge MMI in the afternoon. I then had my DM interview 1.5 months later, and medical another 4 months later.

It's not a very clear email!

Just sit tight mate, there short of drivers at Leeds and I would assume that course places are limited, patience is a virtue in this industry, it took me 18 months to get a Conductor job from my initial application.

I was on a 322 from Leeds to Bentley today sat at the front end just behind the driver's cab. I believe the driver was under supervision as there were two of them chatting and at one point I heard one congratulate the other on a very smooth stop at South Elmsall. Made me think about how I'd love to be sat there in the driving seat.

I was quite relieved to get on a nice quiet electric train not a pacer.

The train to Leeds yesterday was a 321. Not a lot of sound insulation on either driving cab.

Had a call from Northern this morning to say that I won't be in the April intake, but I will be put into the 'holding pool' and will be considered for the June intake.

i passed my assessment 11th march had call saying not in april intake but maybe june but wasnt very clear im worried now

I wouldn't worry, you've done the hard part now with passing all the stages of recruitment.

It's more than likely the case that the course was full before you did the assessments, they have already decided that they want to employ you after you did your interview, it's costs alotto do the recruitment process and they wouldn't have progressed you this far if they didn't want to employ you.

Just sit tight mate and your time will come.

I'm still on hold pre-initial sift as far as I know.

I wish they'd have sifted everyone first and put us out of our misery! Even if we weren't all invited for assessment straight away.

I'm in the same position as you Steve. With several courses scheduled this year, it is possible that applicants may be called for interviews weeks or even months from now. When you hear about places being filled and assessments going on it can certainly make you feel a bit tense that you don't know where you stand. I'm just keeping fingers crossed and hoping I'm still in the game. Not had a "thanks but no thanks" letter so there's still a chance.

ive applied for leeds depot was absolutely chuffed weds to pass assessment then such a come down thurs after that phone call left me thinking am i actually gonna ever get there . thanks for your reply andrew , colin
