At Batley waiting for the 1837 to Manchester Victoria, I've just seen a Northern 2-car 158 fly through on the Up, with Manchester Victoria on the destination display. Anyone have any idea what this was? There appeared to be pax on board.

Possibly a diverted 2Mxx that would normally run via Bradford? They often divert us that way when significantly late or when the job is stopped via Bradford. Sometimes go up to Halifax & change ends, sometimes straight up the L&Y.

That would make sense... Was worried it might have been the one I was waiting for (or part of it) as that is usually 142+158... would be early for it though. The 1837 turned up 5 late formed of 150/1+ a rather stinky Merseytravel 142. Connection from Dewsbury was 185108 still bearing the 'Capital of Culture' decals. On board were 2 catering trollies with one attendant, and THREE guards, all of whom had avantixs (avantices?) but none of them attempted to sell me a ticket... Had the barriers at HUD been open the railway would've lost £3.80 (and Yorkshire Tiger gained £2.30), but as they were closed, I did buy my Batley to Denby Dale anytime single from the gate attendant.

Looks like it was the 1818 Leeds to Man Vic 2M21. 1735 Leeds to Huddersfield via Halifax broke down at New Pudsey, blocking the line for a time, as a result this Man Vic service will arrive in Manchester earlier than the one that left 30 mins before it.

Anyone know what sort of rolling stock the broken down train was?

The 144s seem to be struggling a bit at the moment. Last Friday I was on 144020 on the Penistone line, which was making a rather unhealthy noise, and leaking significantly through the gangway area. This evening another 3-car set on the 1914 HUD-SHF had similar problems with water ingress.
