Northern 156s

A quick question for people on the other side of the Pennines;

I'm currently planning a trip on Northern services, and as it's been a few years since I last used one (that wasn't EMT!), I'm hoping to find a 156 or two on my journey. I'm wondering which routes are most likely to produce a 156?

Are there any 156 workings on the Hope Valley, or is it all Pacer worked?

On a Saturday 6th August there was a 142, a 150 and a 156 working the three Hope Valley diagrams. I'm not sure if this is a regular thing, or just on a Saturday. Perhaps someone with access to the diagrams will be able to help. Bear in mind that the Hope Valley stopping service is only every 2 hours for much of the day on a weekday, whereas it is hourly on a Saturday.

The Cumbrian Coast produces a few 156s.

One of the three Vic-Clitheroe diagrams usually sees a 156 on it.

Nearest ones to you will be some of the Hope Valley services (but not many), Man Pic - Buxton and Man Pic - Liverpool Lime Street. Otherwise it is travelling to Liverpool or the NE.

The Morecambe-Lancaster shuttles are normally 156s.

Get yourself down to Man Vic, honestly, I went down and almost everything I saw was either a 156 or a 150.

At Vic, we are blessed with days of 156's everywhere, then the next day its 142's to everywhere

I'd also say that Manchester Picc to Marple/Rose Hill/New Mills gets a fair few 156s, but you also run the risk of a pacer. Same with the Mid Cheshire.

If you are going to Liverpool, I find that the Man AIrport - Liverpool via Newton (Fast) is the service most likely to get a 156

The Wigan Wallgate routes seem to be full of them now, at what appears to be at the expense of the 142. Those 142's have definitely been moved away from Wigan somewhere

Manchester Airport to Liverpool services are the best place to find 156s.

The 08:17 Manchester to Chester, 10:07 Chester to Manchester and 12:17 Manchester to Chester are 156 booked, that unit then goes on to the afternoon Helsby-Ellesmere Port workings (!) and finishes up on Liverpool to Manchester Oxford Road in time for the evening peak.

The 16:58 Stockport-Chester quite often turns up a 156 but it seems to be a lucky dip. Today it was a 156 but it was running late so may not have been the originally intended unit.

156s also appear on Huddersfield-Victoria and Stalybridge to Lime Street but I don't know any of the diagrams for those lines.

Afraid not. Plenty of them squealing on the Mid Cheshire line today. I would like to have had a decibel reader when the 16:07 Chester-Manchester squealed in to Altrincham while I was waiting for the 16:58 Stockport-Chester. I'm used to Pacers squealing but I had to literally put my hands over my ears when said Pacer was not even on a bendy section of the track.

Oh please no: I'm quite sentimentally fond of the 142s, but don't taint the east side of Northern with Newton Heaths' horrible Merseytravel/bus seat fitted units when we've got all the nice comfortable Northern Spirit seated ones!

The most likely places to find a 156 tend to be

Liverpool-Oxford Road
Liverpool-Manchester Airport
Liverpool-Blackpool North

The Pacers tend to appear on

Liverpool-Stalybridge with the 150's appearing pretty much every where!
