According to the Huddersfield Examiner the Northern 153s are to get completely repainted internally, new seat covers (provided by West Yorkshire firm Camira), LED lighting and lino flooring. Also the internal doors will be removed to improve accessibility.

Full article here: http://www.examiner.co.uk/news/west-yorkshire-news/northern-rail-revamp-seats-trains-7002042 has the story merged with another about East Coast getting new trains and details about exactly who Camira have provided fabric for.)

They have already begun. I was on one of the ex NWT 153s a few weeks ago which had been refreshed. It looked quite smart too.

The ex ATN 142/156 and ex FNW class 153s were the shabbiest of the Northern fleet so glad they are all being refurbished properly

Northern would like to know if you find yourself travelling on 1 of its refreshed Class153 trains. Tweet @northernrailorg with a picture and include #153Fresh.

The ex ATN 142/156

Now those have been refreshed/are being refreshed it means the ex-LM 150s and the 'Oldham Loop' 142s are the scruffiest, with the aged flooring providing a visual mis-match with the purple seating.
