The word that 3 x Class 150/1 are to be sub-leased by Northern to West Midlands Trains to provide replacement stock for Bedford-Bletchley services leads me to ask what is happening with the 2 x 150/2 sets that left Neville Hill last year, supposedly to be returned by Christmas. Has the loan been extended following the damage to two of TfW’s own sets at Craven Arms?

Last I heard was extended until May, but we'll have to wait and see.

Perhaps Manchester/Newton Heath routes can cope with less 150s than East & South Yorkshire/Neville Hill routes can and that’s why they’ve chosen /1s to go down rather than sending the /2s currently with TfW.

It seems odd to me given that Northern (West) don't seem to be cutting as much as Northern (East) in May, and these units are due in September so the potential round of further cuts in Dec 23 won't have taken effect by then.

Are they released by the arrival of EMR 156s?

Tbh, Manchester usually has pairs of 150-1/156, whereas on the East the 150/2s over there tend to work alone, so I’d imagine it comes down to a shorter Manc service being better than a cancelled East service.

The 15 x Class 156 units still in course of transfer from East Midlands were originally intended to make up the fleet strength after the 153s were withdrawn and to allow lengthening some formations from 2 to 4 cars. The situation has apparently changed somewhat to the extent that Northern can sub-lease 3 units to West Midlands, no doubt at the behest of the DfT. The return of the pair of 150/2 units from TfW will help to mitigate the effect.

The majority of 150/2s work on the East though and are not affected by 150/1 work. I think there’s three /2s mixed in with the West side 150 pool along with the /1s, I know 225 is one, but I don’t believe the TfW borrowed ones were the other two.

I have a distant memory - that could be now wrong with infrastructure changes - that only a 2 car 150/1 could be used on Marston line as the 150/2 has the additional power doors in passenger use and this made the overall platform length required longer.
Happy to be corrected if this has changed

The crew doors of a 150/2 are only in passenger use when coupled into a 4-car set, so I doubt it. When running alone the door between the narrow vestibule and the saloon is locked.

Not on Northern, it's perfectly normal for all doors to be in use.

According to RTT 269 & 270 were paired up this morning and still showing as paired up now.
I popped down to Merthyr Vale to get a photo but unfortunately 269 showed up solo.DSC_0910.JPG

Nope, i alighted from a northern 150/2 by the front doors last week at Sheffield

If the drivers key is taken out when arriving at Sheff then the door becomes active . Prob how you got use it .
I'm pretty sure that at intermediate stops, the crew door behind the leading cab is not available to passengers, and this has been the case since the units were introduced. The scenario described above is also quite unusual, perhaps the driver was in need of an urgent PNB upon arrival!

The single leaf doors behind the cabs only become operational when the drivers desk is turned off. So in service are not available for passenger use. I always direct passengers to the 1st set of passenger doors whenever I pull into a station and they try to board at the crew door.

I'm under the impression that it will be Northern units going straight to the Marston Vale, but I don't think anything is actually confirmed yet.

I read somewhere on here that they will be 3 Northern 150/1s, not the 3 that are presently with TfW, which are /2s. The reason for this is that a couple of platforms are under 40m (Kempston Hardwick's Bletchley bound platform is one, 37m if I recall, and I think there *may* be another one) which would result in the cab door being off the platform, and on /2s these can in some situations be used by passengers.

It's a shame as TfW's own units are far nicer, with 2+2 seating, lots of tables and a nicer colour scheme!

I passed 270 running a west Wales service think it was to Pembroke dock at 1430.

However tfw do need their own 150s as they're still working Marches services along with their usual work.

Northern don't usually lock that door. If the guard released the doors from behind the driver's cab, you could use the rear door to exit in the normal way.

Reported elsewhere to be 150137/139 and 141, to go to Bletchley from Newton Heath in June, remaining in Northern livery but staying until at least 2025, when the current Northern concession expires.

It's TWO with TfW. Not three. As stated up thread.
As you probably knew, it’s very likely he was well aware they had two but did the very easy mistake of when two numbers are in one sentence, putting the first number twice.

So it is June now then, is it, rather than October like someone said up thread? That’s good if so. I couldn’t for the life of me work out what would take them that long to send them.
