I see that Northern have basically allowed the 144's to be bypassed by all the relivering and refurbishment work going on. Does anyone know what the policy on these untis is as the 142's were originally the ones going into store before demand increased. Are the 144's part of the relivery process or are they slated for early withdrawal when the new stock arrives post 2010.

The 144's are "supposed" to stick to metro sponcered services so metro want to keep them in that colour. They are the only units that are dedicated to the metro services thats why they are the only units left not to be painted.

However metro didn't want the 333's painted and some of them have been done so who knows the 144's could be done but no plans for them yet. If the 144's are to be done they will NOT be purple and dark blue, it will be something like on the 321's used on the Leeds - Doncaster route.

Hope this helps.

The 333's aren't painted they are Vynil. There is Fault's with the Vynil though so who knows the 333's Future. Ive Heard 144's will be Started to be looked at Once all Vic Drivers Sign em.

I would be quite sad to see 144's heading to Manchester as I am rather fond of them - having said that, I used the Dearne Valley line recently (a route not subsidised by Metro) and was treated to a 144 so it wouldn't surprise me to see them in Northern Livery. I actually think the 333's and 321/9's look quite smart in Northern Red/Purple.

Although I have'nt heard anything about it myself personally, if the 3 car 144's would certainly be valuable asset to the extremely busy, rush hour services in Greater Machester, Lancashire and Merseyside too. I also agree, they will probably look quite smart in traditional NR livery.

144s regularly work Sheffield - Lincoln (via Worksop) too, complete with that ghastly livery.

They already work victoria - leeds via brighouse services hourly.
Id rather have the 142's withdrawn than the 144's. Its still a pacer but suprisingly more superior to the 142. E.g. compare the seats!

I tihnk the 150's should be the 1st to be withdrawn then all of the pacers.

Pacers are ribbish, all be it rather comical.

I think a sentiment from the heart rather than the head that one! 150's are very useful on busy routes due to the door arrangement and more standing room - as the pacers can be. I know I will be destroyed for saying this, but I would rather be on a 3-car 144 or 2-car 150 on a very busy service than a 2-car 158 - despite my love of the 158.

Let me explain my reasoning.

If you manage to get a seat at a busy time but are not travelling very far, one has to fight one's way from the seat to the door on a 158, whilst on the pre mentioned trains, it is much easier to get off when it is your time. It is also much better for standing passengers as there is loads more room in the doorway.

Stick two or three pacers together for a busy train and you would find they do an excellent job. Hence I would be sad to see the 144 move to Manchester as they can often be found ploughing my regular route out of Leeds.

It will be interesting to see if the 3-car sets receive this colour, or the 'Metro' version of the colour scheme, bearing in mind they were paid for by the PTE.

They were all sponsored by the PTE, but the West Yorkshire EMU's also sponsored by Metro have received Red/Purple as opposed to Northern Blue/Purple. Maybe this means that the 144 is (sadly) moving away from Leeds. It does look smart in its' new livery though.

The centre cars were more than sponsored by the PTE - they are actually owned by them!

Indeed! My point remains that I would be sorry to see them leave Leeds. A number of times I have been treated to a 6 car 144 formation. Fabulous little units.

Here's another point, it is not that long since they were refurbished with a red interior. Will Blue/Pruple units be coloured as such inside? Or will we have a fantastic spectrum clash?

Nothing has been done to the insides of the units so they remain red. As for the three cars I dunno, may we see a purple with vinyl combo!

With everyone talking about if the 144 has had refurb and why not etc.. to be honest the only thing wrong with the 144's is the seat covers! change those to the northern strips and youll be laughing! Nothing else really needs improving really.

Sorry the point of that post was what exactly?

Presumably he's referring to the units which have been re-liveried in Northern colours (with Metro decals).

001 and 004 certainly have been - I've seen them both recently.

There's only 144011 in the Metro livery at the moment I think, the rest of the two car 144s are in Northern colours. Maybe we'll find out whats going to happen to the three car variety soon.

011 is believed to be in NH paintshop now.
