Northen/Scotrail trains

folks,
When on route from Glasgow to London whilst heading through Carlisle l have observed on many occasions scotrail loco's at the station.l was wondering if Northan trains go from Carlisle to Glasgow,as l have not seen any at Glasgow Central.Have they ever in recent times worked this route.
Or is it just the big boys who do this route....?

Northern share some services between Newcastle and Glasgow with Scotrail - Northern staff work as far as Carlisle and then Scotrail take over from there. Normally it is always a Scotrail 156 that is used but I've been told a Northern 156 has been used on occassion.

Transpennine Express as it was under Northern Spirit/ATN had a stab at running Carlisle-Glasgow Central via the WCML for a couple of years about a 10 years ago. It was Leeds-Glasgow Central via the S&C using 158s.

ScotRail operate Newcastle-Hexham-Carlisle-Dumfries-Glasgow (some also run Carlisle-Dumfries-Ayr-Stranraer), working out roughly hourly throughout the day at Carlisle, with a few running across to Tyneside, this accounts for the units in ScotRail colours you see at Carlisle. Northern crews work it between Carlisle and Newcastle I think. The furthest north Nnorthern run is Carlisle, or Chathill on the ECML.

ScotRail only operate Glasgow-Carlisle via the Glasgow & South Western via Barrhead, Kilmarnock and Dumfries, TPE and Virgin are the sole providers via Motherwell and Lockerbie. ScotRail's Sleeper runs via Lockerbie, and Virgin trains on diversion can run via Dumfries.

I'm not sure if the Newcastle - Dumfries service still runs (might be early morning, I'd have to check) but there are definitely no Newcastle - Stranraer services anymore.

Northern crew still go as far as Dumfries once a day. Cannot remember what time. Through services to Newcastle and back are diagrammed Corkerhill 156's. Occasionally a Northern 156 will come to Glasgow if there is disruption.

Northern traincrew do the first Carlisle - Glasgow as far as Dumfries on a Sunday . Not sure about mid week but the 06:17 from Dumfries, on a Saturday, is a Northern Unit and crewe to Newcastle.

I remember seeing this just as I was getting back into the railways after a ten year gap
Initially I though it was via the GSW, but later found it was via Motherwell

During the 1980s there was a Glasgow - Leeds service, via the GSW, but I don't recall a Leeds - Glasgow service
However, I do remember the first Carlisle - Glasgow service once being unable to travel via the GSW and so was routed non-stop via Motherwell, arriving nearly an hour early!

I think it might be. I saw a table in either Modern Railways or Rail that listed TOCs by services per day and Northern was either top or in the top 3 certainly.

Yes, Northern is the biggest. Around 2500 services daily.

(off topic) passenger numbers though is either Southern or SouthEastern, isn't it?
Wonder what the largest route-mileage is? Fancy it may be Northern, EMT (who go all the way to Norwich!), LM, FGW or Scotrail (who've definitely got the biggest geographical spread- all the way from Thurso to London).

I doubt there is one. Scotrail don't do trolleys on the GSW, and Northern don't do trolleys at all. I'm pretty sure there's no catering on these services at all.

Last time I used the S+C it was run by the Friends of the S+C line, so don't think Northern have anything to do with this. Still, nice to have a cup of tea and a biscuit when enjoying the route!

not sure Re trolley on carlisle glasgow via dumfries, there have been several stabs at this over the years by outside companies but never lasted. There may now be something, but aint used the run for yonks so dont know.

I thought SWT had the most rolling stock. Does that mean the operator with the most rolling stock has less passengers than other operators?
