An epic journey home from Northampton.....

1916 Northampton to Rugby, due in 1937 - 7 mins late

so I miss the 1942 to Nuneaton....

so I miss the 2004 to Crewe.....

so I miss the 2106 to Liverpool South Parkway.

I have an advance ticket specifying the above trains. So my planned journey is no longer possible, and I now look for the next available train.

Now the next (and indeed, last) train available from Rugby is

2116 to Liverpool Lime St - which arrives 2242 enabling me to double back (if this is allowed!!!!!)

The situation is complicated by the fact my eventual destination is Sankey, and I have the return half of an OP day return LSP-Sankey.

The Liverpool train doesn't turn up until 2150 - now I am anxious about making my connection at Liverpool - so I now decide to travel via Warrington (at least if I get stranded there it's only a 3 mile journey home, rather than 16 miles).

This train is due out at 2136 - but doesn't appear until 2210. Still losing time hand over fist it arrives in Warrington at 2350, just short of an hour late.

Virgin Trains very kindly arrange taxis for people who have missed connections to Liverpool at Crewe, or to stations from Warrington Central, so
I do get home, about 90 minutes late - 5 hours for a 120 miles journey!

Given that VT have been so helpful I don't intend to claim anything from them - but what about LM?

The train was only 7 minutes late - but can I claim for the consequent 90 minutes plus delay on the complete journey? If I had caught the 2116 Liverpool I would still have arrived at LSP a good 90 minutes later than intended, even if the train hadn't been further delayed.

Yikes. I think I'd have been wary of booking a journey like that with what look like some bare minimum connection times tho. (And the various options around Liverpool/Manchester usually confuse me - I go up to Southport once a year from Milton Keynes). Have you gone via MK before?

Under the delay repay scheme you claim from the TOC you were travelling (or wishing to travel on) when things FIRST started to go wrong. Also, as you have an Advance ticket, which is a single ticket so as you are delayed 60 minutes or more to your overall rail journey you are entitled to a compensation for the full value of your ticket.

You should therefore claim from London Midland. You have a valid split ticket compensation so are entitled to 100% of the value of your Advance single (single ticket 60+ mins) and 50% of the value of your off peak day return (return ticket 60-119 mins delay).

The train was only 7 minutes late ...
... it doesn't matter; what matters is that this train being late caused your connections to be missed, and therefore the delay is apportionable to LM.

The fact you were further delayed by VT doesn't change the fact that that any Delay Repay claim needs to go to LM. Yes it's LM's bad luck that further delays occurred and that's just the way it is sometimes.

Make it clear in your application that your journey was from Northampton to Sankey. Had the LM train not been 7 mins late, you would have arrived at your destination at 2228.
