On the 21 august 2009, Wensley and I ventured off to Northallerton for a day of spotting and mega filming and high speed, and boy were we rewarded with some mega stuff...
The day started off well. On my train to Northallerton we passed the empty Jarrow Oil Tanks (JOT) heading north just north of York with an unidentified EWS liveried class 60.
On arrival at Northallerton we were treated with an NXEC 91 flying north and then GBRf 'barbie' liveried 66729 passed through heading south with a loaded coal.
Then after 2 XC Voyagers and 2 NXEC 91's, Grand Central's fourth path service arrived behind 180112 and left sounding very healthy and loking beautiful.
The next train was one we had been looking forward to, the JOT passed through heading north behind 60004, using lots of power to pull the train away.
Northallerton station certainly is perfect for filming high speed services fly through the station. After a stopping class 185, an XC HST flew through heading south, sounding very good.
The next service northbound was a GC service bound for Sunderland with a very good sounding HST set.
Then after some Voyagers, 185's and 91's had pased through, at 11.31 an NXEC HST hammered south with an NXEC liveried set.
After numerous 185's, Voyagers and 91's, the heavens opened making filming harder but quickly a south and northbound NXEC HST passed through giving a nice sight in the rain.
Later at 1.18 after many trains an EWS liveried DBS class 66 heading north with coal empties, making light work of the load.
Possibly the best move of the day was an odd one, a DBS class 66 came through with 2 barrier coaches and a full ex works rake of NXEC Mk 3 coaches, heading for Craigentinny. An odd move for a 66, most normally with a 67...
After an NXEC HST thundered south, a late running GC northbound service crossed at Northallerton with the southbound, which normally cross at Thirsk, giving the rare oportunaty to see 2 GC HST's side by side at a station.
Later at 2.54 after numerous other trains, FL 66599 passed heading north with an empty coal train. Then at 3.20 after some passing trains, 'barbie' GBRf class 66 no. 66729 headed north with empty coal hoppers.
After an NXEC 91 headed south, the day finished with a Northern Rail class 156 passed through heading north with an empty working for Neville Hill to Heaton Depot.
