Hi all,

Is it possible to get to and from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway using public transport?

We've just visited East and North Yorkshire for a few days but I'm gutted to have missed out on visiting the NYMR due to not being able to get there in time.

Is it possible to get to any of the NYMR stations, ideally Whitby or Pickering, using public transport, ideally by train as much as possible as unfortunately I can't drive :(

Am I correct in thinking the National Rail service to/from Whitby is very limited?

(On the plus side I did get to visit the NRM in York which was amazing!)

Many thanks.

Ive done several day trips between Ashford International and the NYMR. Best way I've found is train to Malton. The Bus leaves from outside Malton Station. It is possible to get the same bus from York but particularly on the return trip I find its delayed in traffic on the outskirts of York. Its best to plan your trip on traveline. The Bus stop in Pickering is by a roundabout about 10 mins walk from the NYMR

Is there any reason that the NYMR, being a big tourist attraction in the area don't run their own connecting service (heritage bus/coach or otherwise) from either York,Malton or Scarborough? Or have a through ticket including their line? Have they tried this before and it hasn't been a success?

To the best of my knowledge there is not (and there never was) any perceived need for the NYMR to be joined on at the south end by any means of its own. The NYMR has always been "happy" for people to arrive mainly by car. Indeed, in the early years the public bus service was way, way worse than it is now with as few as 2x per DAY from Malton on Sundays - although the Scarborough provision was arguably better at the time.

There's no need for them to run a connecting service - there's already a perfectly good one already! I don't see all the other local tourist attractions (eg Flamingoland) running one either.

If the NYMR did run their own service, they would have to spend money on one or two buses, storage, fuel, spares, drivers...

Easier really to just hire from a company

Yes the Malton - Pickering bus service may be good on Saturday, (not sure if Coastliner still do the Flamingoland deviation but they do stop nearby) but Sunday service is a struggle

Yup - definitely the best option if you're coming up from the south. I've done it several times now from Bristol, first time getting the bus from York, then subsequently from Malton. Malton is the much better option.

I meant them hiring in a firm to to run them as the Epping Ongar have done. I still think there are visitors to the York area who don't go to the railway due to the present public transport arrangements (particularly on a Sun)

The trouble is that visitors to heritage railways that arrive by bus are few and far between. At the K&ESR we've experimented with it over a few years and its been an unqualified failure. Nearly all passengers are attracted from service buses which as a result become unprofitable. The Epping and Ongar are a bit of a special case because of their proximity to London. We look forward to our mainline connection at Roberstbridge.

Seems the best option, but the connection is about 54 minutes - the bus leaving shortly before the train arrives and the train is only hourly....
The same bus service serves York railway station on its way to Malton and Pickering and Pickering is available as a through ticket on Virgin East Coast from London
