Hi Everyone,
I thought I would creat a thread about the NYMR Autumn Steam Gala. I think I might be going, but I am still usure.
If I do go, I will not be going on the trains but just going to see them.
It's looking like a good line up with these locomotives running,
825 Southern Railway Class S15
*44767 George Stephenson, LMS Class 5
*45428 Eric Treacy LMS Class 5
*49395 LNWR Class G2
*4492 Dominion of New Zealand LNER Class A4
*63395 LNER Class Q6
*75029 Standard Class 4 (freshly overhauled)
92214 Standard Class 9F
I'm paticualy looking forward to seeing LNER Class A4 *4492 Dominion of New Zealand as I realy like the A4s and it will hopefully be my first time I have seen This A4 in this livery. I have however seen Bittern.

Please tell us if you are going the the gala.

Jacob :D

It might be worth posting the dates of the gala if you expect folk to know whether they'd be going or not ;)

It's Friday 30th September until Sunday 2nd October.

With two Black Fives (including my favourite; 'Stephenson) and "Bittern" attending, I would love to go along for a day if only it wasn't so much of a trek from Birmingham only a week after I'll have been in the north east. Shame. :(

Ooops, silly me! , Thanks for telling everyone! :D
It's a shame that you can't make it! I'm thinking the same as you about The Severn Valley Railway Steam Gala. I'm quit lucky actually, as I'm going camping in Pickering on the Weekend of the Gala! Otherwise, I'm not sure I would have been able to go!

That certainly is fortuitous that you are camping in Pickering on the appropriate weekend! Have fun! :D

I seem to have got everything all backwards at the moment: The two steam galas I would love to have a look at are the Severn Valley (I'd like to try out their late evening trains) and the NYMR, but I'm in the North East this weekend and back in the West Midlands next weekend - Ho hum, such is life!

I'm going, I went to the one they had earlier on in the year and it was fantastic! 4492 is great to look at even though I miss Bittern! Seen her at Tyne Yard a few months ago with Sir Nigel Gresley on the Great Britain IV Railtour, well worth catching!

Hi GNER 373,
Glad to here your going. Thanks for telling me how good 4492 is, I have never seen a fully streamlinind A4 in steam and running before, I have only seen them without the streamlining on the side on before.

Another new locomotive has been anounced, it's 7822 Foxcote Manor GWR Manor!
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
It also Says on the NYMR Autumm Steam Gala page that their might also be a Suprise loco visiting, any Suggestions? Maybe 60163 Tornado, but that depends on when when it comes back from the SVR.

4492 was not on the White Rose today as it was canceled, apparently she Failed her Fitness to run exsam. :(

I have read through this thread with interest since I posted my preview gallery on this forum. There are two things which I'd like to make a point on.

Currently 75029 is listed as attending the gala 'fresh from overhaul', but when i was there yesterday it didn't look finished yet. I'm not saying it won't be available, but there looks to be work still to do.

Also, with reference to the possible 'surprise' engine. I notice that 76079 has been moved in front of the deviation shed. It is also fully coaled and the broken cylinder also looks like it has had some sort of temporary fix. This engine is still in ticket. Is it possible that they might bring it back for one last hurrah?

Only seen from distance here are two shots.

Yes, 75029 does not look like it will be ready, considering she has not evan got a smokebox door on!
76079 does look like it could be be ready, maybe she will be the 'Suprise loco'

No Update on 4492 yet though, maybe the exsam was only for mainline running.

Jacob :)

Hi Everyone,
The NYRM Website but it still says that 4492 is attending. Maybe they will have to put her on static display in the shed or in a siding near one of the stations.
It also says a list of other events which are happening over the weekend, including,
Appearance of NER snowplough No 18, recently restored by the NYMR York Area Group. This will be run with an engine through Grosmont station
Demonstration of a steam breakdown crane at Grosmont MPD on Sunday 2nd
Regular display of engines at Pickering station between trains.

Jacob :)

A4 not now attending due to mechanical defect.

Foxcote Manor replacing it.

76079 - acting as station pilot at Grosmont. No temp repairs or other such assumptions, but it is OK for pottering about light loco.

75029 - unlikely.

Also Newly the restored NER snowplough will be getting pushed about at various times.

Esk Valley line running, giving you the chance to experience mainline steam at a fraction of the cost of a charter.

Photo charter with the Manor being run. PRE BOOKING ONLY, VERY LIMITED PLACES - please email nymrphotocharters@yahoo.co.uk if interested.

Fortunately, not everyone else takes such a parasitic attitude; if they did, there would soon be no railway for us to enjoy!

Maybe if it was not so pricey we would go on it. Anyway, we don't think where going on it however no decision has been made.

Approx £20 for a full day's entertainment is hardly unreasonable.

Sadly, you have not recognised that heritage railways do not have a God given right to exist, nor do they have access to a magic money tree. In fact, they are financial black holes.

To give some examples, for those that may wish to have an insight, full overhauls, ie needed every 8 - 10 years are costing in thd region of £500k per loco now, hiring in a loco costs £7 per mile, and that charge applies to most of what is serviceable at Grosmont presently. Coal is circa £170 - 180 per ton, and a loco will use 1 1/2- 2 tons per round trip. Wage costs about 2 million per year from memory.

Now perhaps you will recognise why those that work to keep steam running, get a little upset about freeloaders at the lineside.

Yes, I do know how exspensive it is to run a railway, and that is why it is so exspensive. But if they were a bit cheaper (Not alot cheaper) Maybe less exspensive more people would visit and ride on the trains. Then they could get the same, or evan more money than when it was exspensive.

On the topic of price, the mainline runs are very exspensive, As you have said E&W Lucasit is very exspensive with all the coal and need for overhall but maybe if they could down the prices a bit more people would travel on them and bringing in the same or evan more money than when it was exspensive.

I think we need to remember that we are talking about non-profit organisations. Any money made goes straight back into the infrastructure that keeps things going.

Even the mainline runs, while expensive, don't historically make money. You only have to look at the cost of locomotive movements, delay fines and the fact that even these rely heavily on volunteers for evidence of this. The only reason companies like Steam Dreams exist is because the people that own them do it for the love rather than the business sense.

Whilst we would all love price to come down, I don't think we should be shouting to loudly about it.

I would hope that anybody who doesn't travel still makes some sort of donation. There is a reason why preserved railways are all registered charities!

That's more like it! Thank You.

When visiting heritage lines, please remember that of any money spent on fares, 100% goes into the coffers (VAT exempt). With money spent in shops, etc, although it is a very valuable source of revenue, the railway only sees what's left after VAT, and the cost of the product itself, have been subtracted. Think in terms of 40% of your pound. Far less for enthusiast specific books, DVD's, etc, which have a very poor retailer margin.

The message is that for any heritage line, please buy a ticket to travel. If photting, please put the equivalent into a donation tin.

Hi Everyone,
We Visited the NYMR for the Gala on both Saturday and Sunday. We did manage to go on the trains after all, so atleast we helped the Railway!
On Saturday we went the Grosmont, I thought it was very good as their was alot of Activity their, I don't think their was a time during the day where their was no loco in the station. We also saw the freight train in the station which was good as I have never seen a Steam hauled freight before. Sir Nigal was not the suprise loco (I don't think their was one) as it was in the Workshop. It still looked inmpresive even though it was not in steam. We then visited Goathland to see two trains in the station at once. We were treated to three trains their as one of them was on the freight just a bit out of the station. On Saturday Evening we went to a Level crossing just outside of Pickering to see a 9F go over the crossing. We then visited Pickering to see the new roof on the station and saw the 9F in the station. On Sunday we were at Pickering again and first saw Foxcote Manor parked up in the station wating for the next train to arrive. When the next train did arrive Foxcote Manor Hauled it out of the station Southern Railway Class S15 '825' Replaced it. We then went to a model shop in Pickering and I got some coal to replace the fake plastick coal. We then decided to go on the train so we went into the station to wait for it. While we were wating I manged to cab the Southern S15 which was good. We then boarded the train and watched the S15 couple up to the coaches. We enjoyed the trip from Pickering to Grosmont and we manaed to see the Snowplow at Grosmont. We also visited a good model shop in Grosmont but did not buy anything.
I have got pictuers and they will be hopefully be up soon!

Jacob :)

While I agree that enthusiasts should make paid-for journeys on preserved railways as often as they can, I do not see the harm in those that do sometimes just turning up for a look. Nobody I know is rich enough to have a go on every gala or event, but given that they all go sometimes, and are therefore doing their bit, I think it's absolutely fine that they go photting on other occasions. Calling such people 'parasites' is downright rude IYAM, and not a little self-righteous.

I think 'photting' is okay to do every so often but not everytime.

Oh, by the way, I had a few 1ps and 2ps in my pocket so they went into a donation tin at Grosmont MPD. I know it was not much but we did still travel on the train.
